AI Revolutionizes Research Data Management with FAIR2 System
Scientific research is on the brink of a transformative shift, thanks to a new artificial intelligence (AI) system known as **FAIR2 Data Management**. This innovative platform aims to unlock vast amounts of research data that have historically remained underutilized. Statistics indicate that out of every 100 datasets produced, approximately **80%** stay within laboratories, while only **1%** lead to new discoveries. FAIR2 seeks to change this by enhancing data reuse and accessibility.
The **FAIR2 Data Management** system, developed by the open-science publisher **Frontiers**, is designed to ensure that scientific datasets are not only reusable but also properly credited. By integrating essential processes such as curation, compliance checks, AI-ready formatting, peer review, and certification into a single platform, FAIR2 streamlines the research data lifecycle. This comprehensive approach is intended to promote responsible data sharing and enhance the visibility of scientific contributions.
What is FAIR?
The principles underlying FAIR2 build on the **FAIR** framework, which stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. These principles were articulated in a **March 2016** paper published in the journal **Scientific Data** by a consortium of researchers and organizations. The **G20 leaders** later endorsed these principles at the **2016 G20 Hangzhou summit**, recognizing their importance in advancing global research efforts.
FAIR2 represents the first practical implementation of the FAIR principles, emerging at a time when the volume of research output is increasing rapidly. The system transforms theoretical guidelines into a robust infrastructure that can deliver measurable benefits. It is poised to accelerate advancements in critical areas such as health, sustainability, and technology.
Overcoming Barriers in Science
The introduction of the FAIR2 system aims to address several pressing challenges in the scientific community. Current barriers have led to slower progress in areas like cancer treatment, insufficient climate modeling, and difficulties in replicating studies. By utilizing AI technology, the **AI Data Steward**, powered by **Senscience**, automates tasks that previously required extensive manual effort. This includes organizing and verifying datasets, generating metadata, and preparing publishable outputs—all of which can now be accomplished in mere minutes.
Researchers utilizing FAIR2 receive four integrated outputs: a certified **Data Package**, a peer-reviewed and citable **Data Article**, an **Interactive Data Portal** featuring visualizations and AI chat, and a **FAIR2 Certificate**. Each component is designed with quality controls and clear summaries, making the data more comprehensible for users across various disciplines.
For instance, one dataset, the **Environmental Pressure Indicators (1990-2050)**, combines observed data and modeled forecasts from **43 countries** over six decades. It tracks emissions, waste, population growth, and GDP, serving as a crucial resource for sustainability benchmarking and evidence-based climate policy planning.
The FAIR2 initiative also emphasizes enhancing the visibility and accessibility of research data. By supporting responsible reuse among scientists, policymakers, and communities, FAIR2 allows society to maximize the value derived from its investments in scientific research.
Dr. **Ángel Borja**, a Principal Researcher at **AZTI** and affiliated with the **Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA)**, has praised the system. As the FAIR2 Data Management system is implemented, it holds the potential to significantly reshape the landscape of scientific research, making it more democratic and efficient.
