On October 19, 2023, artificial intelligence firm Anthropic announced a substantial deal with Google Cloud aimed at significantly enhancing its computing capabilities. The agreement, worth tens of billions of dollars, will see Anthropic acquire up to one million Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), custom-designed chips developed by Google. This partnership is expected to deliver over a gigawatt of new computing power by the end of 2026, allowing Anthropic to address the “exponentially growing demand” for its Claude AI models, as stated by Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao.

Founded in early 2021 by former employees of OpenAI, Anthropic quickly emerged as a formidable player in the generative AI landscape. The startup was established in response to concerns over the potential harmful effects of AI models, which were not being adequately addressed by its previous employer, guided by CEO Sam Altman. With backing from Amazon, Anthropic has rapidly evolved its offerings in the wake of the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, striving to keep pace with competitors like OpenAI and Nvidia.

In recent months, Anthropic has been recognized as a leading performer in generative AI for computer programming, despite trailing OpenAI in user base and brand recognition. The expanded collaboration with Google reflects Anthropic’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its technology infrastructure. Thomas Kurian, head of Google Cloud, emphasized that the decision to increase the use of TPUs stems from their strong price performance and efficiency observed by Anthropic’s teams over several years.

New Developments and Global Expansion

Anthropic’s latest release, the Claude Sonnet 4.5, launched in September 2023, is touted as the most advanced generative AI model for coding tasks. It is designed to enable AI assistants to operate computers similarly to human users, showcasing Anthropic’s innovation in the field. The company also plans to open an office in India next year, recognizing the country’s surging demand for AI solutions as it approaches a projected 900 million internet users by the end of 2023.

Valued at $183 billion, Anthropic’s growth trajectory continues to gain momentum. In contrast, OpenAI’s valuation has reportedly surged to $500 billion following a private share sale, positioning it as the world’s most valuable startup. With a diverse workforce of 2,400 employees from 100 different nationalities, Anthropic is poised to play a vital role in the evolving landscape of generative AI.

The collaboration between Anthropic and Google signals a robust commitment to advancing artificial intelligence capabilities and meeting the increasing global demand for innovative AI technologies. As major players in the industry continue to invest heavily in AI development, the competition is expected to intensify, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of artificial intelligence.
