British Columbia Invests $1.9 Million in UVic Research Initiatives

The Government of British Columbia is committing $1.9 million to support ten research initiatives at the University of Victoria (UVic). This funding, announced on February 19, 2026, during the annual Quantum Days event, aims to enhance research capabilities in fields such as quantum computing, clean technology, and life sciences. The grants will be distributed through the B.C. Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF), the province’s main program dedicated to advancing research infrastructure.

The investment is designed to equip UVic researchers and students with essential tools, fostering discoveries and preparing a new generation of innovators. Among the projects receiving funding is a quantum computing initiative, which will receive over $90,000 for advanced equipment. This technology will enable researchers to develop computers that can tackle problems that traditional supercomputers cannot efficiently solve.

Quantum technology focuses on the peculiar behaviors of subatomic particles to create groundbreaking tools, including quantum computers, sensors, and new materials. Professor Thomas Baker, from the departments of physics and chemistry at UVic, emphasized the transformative potential of quantum research. He stated, “Quantum has so much potential to solve real-world problems and to create new knowledge in fundamental science.” He added that support from initiatives like the BCKDF is crucial in nurturing the growing interest in quantum fields among researchers, students, and industry professionals.

Students engaged in these projects will gain hands-on experience, equipping them for careers in rapidly evolving sectors. Lisa Kalynchuk, UVic’s vice-president of research and innovation, highlighted the significance of this funding for the university’s research trajectory. “This investment helps our internationally recognized researchers continue to lead in their fields,” she noted. “It also advances the university’s vision of creating a better world through engagement and innovation.”

The funding supports a diverse array of projects, each aimed at addressing critical challenges in various fields. Key initiatives include:

– **Geomorphology and Chronology Research (GCR) Lab**: A facility focused on quantifying glacial geomorphic changes, receiving $132,273.
– **Multi-scale Multi-material Additive Manufacturing**: This project for advanced materials development is allocated $290,000.
– **Energy Efficient Computing Infrastructure**: Supporting quantum physics research with a budget of $90,800.
– **GAMES Laboratory**: Dedicated to gaming, analytics, and esports, this lab will receive $130,000.
– **HAWC Satellite Mission**: Investigating high-altitude aerosols, water vapour, and clouds, with funding of $350,000.
– **Live Cell Imager with Confocal Capability**: This project has been awarded $300,000.
– **Microscopy Facility for Earth, Ocean, and Climate Science**: Receiving $125,000 to enhance research capabilities.
– **Socio-Ecological Landscapes Lab**: A new facility for studying alpine and Arctic ecosystems, funded at $150,000.
– **Advancing Combinatorial Biomarker Development in Metastatic Prostate Cancer**: This initiative aims to improve cancer diagnostics with a grant of $150,000.
– **Radical Manifolds for Selective Catalysis**: A comprehensive research platform with $225,000 allocated for discovery and development.

Since its inception in 1998, the BCKDF has played a pivotal role in advancing research infrastructure across the province. Since 2017, it has allocated nearly $367 million to over 600 projects, enhancing equipment and facilities at universities, research hospitals, and non-profit organizations.

This latest investment underscores the commitment of the Government of British Columbia to fostering innovation and addressing pressing scientific challenges, ensuring that researchers at UVic are well-equipped to make significant contributions to their fields.
