Calgary Teen Charged for Allegedly Creating AI-Generated Explicit Images

A high school student in Calgary is facing multiple charges after allegedly using artificial intelligence to create sexualized images of teenage girls. The accused, a 17-year-old, is reported to have manipulated photos of girls from various high schools in the Calgary area. The charges stemmed from a police operation conducted over two weeks ago, which involved the execution of a search warrant at a residence in Calgary. Staff-Sgt. Mark Auger, from the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), confirmed that two cellphones, a tablet, and a laptop were seized during the search. These devices are believed to contain evidence related to the alleged crimes.

Under Canadian law, specifically the Criminal Code, child sex abuse and exploitation material includes any visual representation of individuals under the age of 18 engaged in explicit sexual activities or created to appear as such. The charges against the teenager include making, possessing, and distributing this type of material.

Auger emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “What teens need to realize is that creating these images and sharing deep fakes is considered an extreme form of bullying and a criminal offence, and we will take action against it.” This statement highlights the legal and ethical implications of using technology for harmful purposes.

ALERT, a provincially funded unit comprising municipal police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), is dedicated to addressing serious crimes, including trafficking, child exploitation, and gang violence.
