Digital Journal has announced its partnership with Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation (API) as the official media partner for the upcoming Life Sciences Week 2025, scheduled to take place from September 22-26 in Edmonton and Calgary. This collaboration aims to elevate Alberta’s life sciences developments within national and international discussions surrounding research, commercialization, and investment.

The week-long program will feature a diverse array of events, including the Life Sciences Summit, panel discussions, industry tours, and pitch sessions. These activities will showcase the contributions of researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers to highlight how Alberta’s life sciences ecosystem is fostering commercialization and creating a conducive environment for growth.

API’s Role in Life Sciences Week

API, one of Canada’s largest organizations focused on life sciences commercialization, manages Life Sciences Week alongside various partners from across Alberta. The media partnership with Digital Journal is seen as a significant opportunity to promote the province’s advancements in the innovation ecosystem.

Andrew MacIsaac, CEO of API, expressed enthusiasm regarding the collaboration, stating, “We’re thrilled to have Digital Journal taking part in Life Sciences Week. Something truly phenomenal is happening in the province; we’re seeing tremendous momentum growing in the sector that is set to change the Life Sciences nation-wide for the better. We’re collaborating across the country and we can’t wait for Digital Journal to be part of capturing the excitement.”

This year’s agenda will focus on the transformative impact of new technologies and capabilities within the life sciences sector. Key sessions will explore the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare, Alberta’s manufacturing advantages, and innovations in women’s health through a dedicated femtech program. Additionally, early-stage ventures in Calgary and Edmonton will be highlighted through regional spotlight events.

Alberta’s Life Sciences Sector on the Rise

Alberta’s life sciences sector is experiencing significant growth. According to BioAlberta’s 2025 delegation report, the industry generates approximately $9.2 billion in annual revenue and supports over 34,000 jobs, contributing $4.7 billion to the provincial GDP. The ecosystem encompasses more than 1,900 companies and organizations, with small enterprises planning to add 1,800 jobs this year, representing a 44% increase in direct industry employment since 2022.

The sector’s global reputation is also improving. The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has climbed to the 38th position in the world rankings, up ten places from the previous year. Other notable developments include the expansion of the Life Sciences Campus in the Edmonton Research Park, anchored by Canada’s largest Critical Medicines Production Centre, and growing momentum from companies such as Future Fields, PulseMedica, and Entos. Calgary-based enterprises like Nanotess and NorthernRNA are also contributing to the sector’s dynamism.

Digital Journal is set to provide comprehensive coverage of the events during Life Sciences Week, capturing how discussions and announcements translate into tangible opportunities for Alberta’s life sciences sector.

Chris Hogg, CEO of Digital Journal, noted, “Life Sciences Week brings together many parts of the ecosystem, and API plays a central role in building the conditions for life sciences to grow in Alberta. We’re excited to work alongside them to connect those stories through coverage, highlighting where commercialization is working, where challenges remain, and how Canadian opportunities are being shaped in real time.”

The coverage will spotlight emerging conversations around commercialization, investment, and talent during innovation showcases, policy discussions, and community mixers. It will also track how these discussions inform Canada’s position in the global health innovation landscape.

Life Sciences Week 2025 promises to be a pivotal event, running from September 22-26 in Edmonton and Calgary, aimed at showcasing how Alberta’s ecosystem is bridging research with commercialization to unlock new opportunities in the life sciences sector.
