According to psychologists, a good life can also be characterized by psychological richness, which emphasizes the value of complex experiences over simple joy or purpose-driven living.

For over four decades, scholars have debated what constitutes a good life. The first perspective posits that happiness is key, achieved through comfort and the pursuit of joy. The second argues for a meaningful existence, grounded in purpose and connections with others. However, Shigehiro Oishi, a psychologist at the University of Chicago, proposes a third path: a psychologically rich life filled with novel experiences and insightful challenges.

Understanding Psychological Richness

Oishi, who developed the concept of psychological richness, describes it as a life that includes unique experiences and transformative insights. He draws a comparison between happiness, which fluctuates like a batting average, and psychological richness, which resembles career highlights filled with intriguing stories and significant events. This richness can grow from activities such as traveling, meeting diverse individuals, or even overcoming obstacles.

Erin Westgate, a social psychologist at the University of Florida, elaborates on the notion that psychological richness encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones. “It’s cognitively and emotionally uncomfortable,” Westgate explains, “to realize that I thought the world was one way, and now I realize it’s another way.” This journey of self-discovery can lead to a more profound understanding of life.

In reflecting on life’s journey, individuals may convey their experiences differently based on their path. Together with colleagues, he identified a gap in well-being research, noting that the traditional views of happiness and meaning often lean towards stability and routine.

According to Oishi and his team, happiness relies on repeating small joys, while meaning is derived from consistent efforts to contribute positively to the world. Psychological richness, in contrast, is characterized by the pursuit of unique experiences that may not always bring joy or serve a higher purpose. “The theory of psychological richness is the most interesting, exciting new theory in well-being science,” stated Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor at the University of California at Riverside, who was not involved in this research.

Interestingly, the three paths—happiness, meaning, and psychological richness—are not mutually exclusive. Research indicates that many individuals desire aspects of all three in their lives. However, when participants were asked to choose one path, the majority favored happiness, while 6.7 to 16.8 percent selected psychological richness, indicating a significant minority who appreciate the importance of diverse experiences.

People inclined towards openness and curiosity are more likely to lead psychologically rich lives. This lifestyle correlates with greater cognitive complexity, enabling individuals to adopt a holistic view of their experiences. Additionally, research shows that psychological richness is linked to certain health outcomes, including enhanced coping confidence and perceived social support.

Interestingly, those who identify as politically liberal are often associated with psychological richness, whereas politically conservative individuals tend to report higher levels of happiness and meaning in their lives. Since the inception of this research, Oishi has received messages from individuals expressing gratitude for providing them with a vocabulary to describe their desired experiences.

Strategies for Cultivating Psychological Richness

Researchers emphasize that no single path is superior to another; each offers unique flavors of a fulfilling life. Even those who prioritize happiness or meaning can benefit from integrating strategies for psychological richness into their daily routines. Oishi underscores the importance of refreshing one’s approach to life.

One effective strategy is to embrace play. “Let yourself go and be open to being foolish,” Oishi advises. Exploring new neighborhoods, visiting thrift shops, or even taking an improv comedy class can add layers of richness to everyday life. “Saying yes to friends’ and family members’ suggestions can open up a world of possibilities,” he notes.

Another important aspect is to embrace discomfort. Westgate highlights that while individuals may hesitate to engage in new activities due to fear, they should remember that challenges can foster growth. “Discomfort is a sign that you’re growing,” she states, encouraging individuals to take reasonable risks.

Lastly, journaling can help individuals preserve and reflect on their experiences. Oishi suggests that documenting adventures through writing, photography, or sharing stories can enrich one’s life by creating a personal archive of meaningful moments. “Curating your experiences helps you enrich yourself every day,” he concludes.
