Lethbridge Polytechnic Achieves Top 10 Status in Research Rankings
Lethbridge Polytechnic has been recognized as one of Canada’s leading research colleges, achieving the ninth position in the latest rankings published by Research Infosource. This marks an improvement from its previous rankings of tenth in 2022 and eleventh in 2023. The report highlights the polytechnic’s commitment to applied research, which began with the establishment of the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence in 1999.
Over the years, Lethbridge Polytechnic has expanded its research initiatives through the Centre of Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Currently, these initiatives encompass five major themes: agriculture, food and environment, business and technology, health and wellness, and justice and public safety. This broad focus reflects the institution’s aim to address diverse industry and community needs.
Kenny Corscadden, Vice-President of Academic and Research at Lethbridge Polytechnic, expressed pride in the institution’s recognition. “Being recognized for our applied research, when compared with so many other institutions across Canada, is a remarkable win for the polytechnic,” he stated in a press release. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a competitive edge at the national level, highlighting the institution’s role in providing applied learning and research opportunities.
Commitment to Community and Industry Needs
The essence of applied research at Lethbridge Polytechnic lies in its responsiveness to the needs of industry and community. Andrew Dunlop, Associate Vice-President of Research, elaborated on the institution’s strategy, stating, “Lethbridge Polytechnic has worked to diversify our research capabilities, develop relationships with stakeholders and leverage the strengths of our researchers to solve challenges and problems.”
Dunlop also discussed the transition of Lethbridge College to its new identity as a polytechnic, underscoring the change in its mandate. “To get people used to the idea that it is a different kind of institution now,” he remarked, indicating that the new branding aims to reflect its evolving role in applied research. He further noted that achieving a high ranking enhances public confidence in the institution’s research capabilities.
The recognition from Research Infosource serves not only as an accolade but also as a testament to Lethbridge Polytechnic’s ongoing commitment to innovation and practical research. With a focus on collaboration and community engagement, the institution continues to position itself as a critical player in applied research across Canada.
