McGill University Climbs to Third in National Research Rankings
McGill University has ascended to third place in the latest annual rankings of Canada’s top 50 research universities, as published by Research Infosource. The institution, which previously held fourth place, also maintained its position as the second-best university for medical research. This recognition highlights McGill’s ongoing commitment to advancing research excellence across multiple disciplines.
The improved ranking is attributed to a significant increase in McGill’s research funding. In 2024, the university secured $749 million in sponsored research income from various sources, including government, industry, and foundation partners. This figure represents a growth of over nine percent compared to the previous year.
Growth in Research Intensity
Another key metric used by Research Infosource is research intensity, which measures total research funding relative to the number of full-time faculty members. McGill’s research intensity rose from $380,000 to $407,000, reflecting a seven percent increase. This growth underscores the university’s ability to attract resources and enhance its research capabilities.
Dominique Bérubé, Vice-President (Research and Innovation) at McGill, expressed pride in the university’s achievements. “McGill’s advancement position in this year’s rankings and continued excellence of its medical school reflects the exceptional efforts of our researchers and the strength of the partnerships that support their work,” Bérubé stated. “The University remains focused on driving innovation and ensuring that our research contributes to challenges facing communities in Quebec, Canada, and around the world.”
