Ontario Science Centre Secures Interim Home at Harbourfront Centre
The Ontario Science Centre will temporarily relocate to the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto next summer while plans for its permanent new home at Ontario Place progress. The announcement, made by the provincial Ministry of Tourism, emphasizes that this interim site will enable the Science Centre to continue its programming, support local jobs, and enhance tourism.
Originally opened in 1969 on Don Mills Road, the Ontario Science Centre faced closure in June 2024 after an engineering assessment revealed a significant risk of roof collapse. This decision, made by the government led by Premier Doug Ford, sparked public criticism. Currently, the Science Centre operates a smaller display space within Sherway Gardens mall, which will remain open until January 4, 2026.
Stan Cho, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, expressed optimism about the interim location. He stated, “By establishing the Ontario Science Centre’s interim location at the Harbourfront Centre, we’re helping Ontario families access world-class science programming even as we continue building a new, expanded and state-of-the-art Ontario Science Centre just steps away at Ontario Place.” This move aims to maintain the Science Centre’s mission of fostering a lasting appreciation for science among families while contributing to the vibrancy of Toronto’s waterfront.
Expanding Opportunities at Harbourfront Centre
The Ontario Science Centre’s KidSpark learning space has already found a home at the Harbourfront Centre, having opened in December 2024. Cathy Loblaw, CEO of Harbourfront Centre, welcomed the Science Centre’s expansion, noting, “Harbourfront Centre has long been a trusted destination for families, and we are pleased to welcome the Ontario Science Centre’s expansion on our campus.”
Plans for the Harbourfront Centre include expanding the Science Centre’s space by summer 2026. The new areas will feature dedicated exhibition and workshop spaces alongside community event venues. The expanded site will cover approximately 86,000 square feet, incorporating classrooms and outdoor program areas designed to enhance educational experiences.
The interim relocation reflects a strategic approach to ensure that the Ontario Science Centre can continue to engage with the community while its permanent facility is constructed. With a focus on fostering learning and exploration, the Science Centre aims to create engaging experiences for visitors of all ages during this transitional phase.
As the Ontario Science Centre prepares for this move, it underscores the importance of accessible science education and the role of such institutions in enriching community life.
