Saskatchewan Polytechnic Receives $1 Million for Vet Tech Lab

Saskatchewan Polytechnic has secured a significant $1 million donation to establish a Veterinary Technology Simulation Lab at the new Joseph A. Remai Saskatoon Campus. The funding comes from the Heather Ryan and L. David Dubé Foundation, marking a major step forward in enhancing veterinary education in the region.

Advancing Veterinary Education

The newly planned simulation lab aims to provide students with a realistic, hands-on learning environment. This facility will enable students to practice clinical techniques and develop essential skills necessary for their careers in veterinary technology. The lab will feature various simulation experiences, including client scenarios with actors and procedures utilizing advanced computerized models.

According to Heather Ryan, one of the donors, the initiative focuses on ensuring the best possible care for animals in Saskatchewan. “We’re committed to supporting the health and well-being of all animals looked after by vet techs across the province,” she stated. “Animals are a big part of our lives, and we want Sask Polytech students to have access to the latest tools and technology to build their skills and keep them healthy.”

Dr. Larry Rosia, CEO of Saskatchewan Polytechnic, emphasized the critical role of veterinary technologists in the animal health sector. “They are lab technicians, clinical pathology technicians, scrub nurses, and so much more,” he noted. “This program is key to meeting the growing needs of the animal health industry, today and in the years ahead.”

Meeting Industry Demands

The demand for veterinary technologists is on the rise, with opportunities available in veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, livestock operations, animal shelters, diagnostic labs, research facilities, zoos, and game farms. The establishment of the simulation lab will prepare students to meet these demands effectively.

Furthermore, the new campus’s location, close to the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine, will facilitate collaboration and strengthen educational networks. This proximity is expected to enhance the learning experiences of Sask Polytech students and foster professional relationships that benefit Saskatchewan’s communities.

In recognition of the generous donation, the new facility will be named the Ryan/Dubé Veterinary Technology Simulation Lab, reflecting the commitment to improving animal health education and care in the province.
