Saskatchewan Science Centre Promotes Railway Safety Awareness
The Saskatchewan Science Centre has taken significant steps to enhance public awareness of train operations and railway safety. On Thursday morning, a special screening of the documentary Train Time attracted dozens of attendees to the Kramer IMAX theatre. The film provides an in-depth look at how trains function and the technological advancements that have transformed rail transport.
According to Ryan Holota, the chief operating officer of the Saskatchewan Science Centre, many people are unaware of the modern efficiencies of train travel. He stated, “They don’t realize that trains are one of the most fuel-efficient ways to transport goods across North America.” Holota emphasized that contemporary trains are equipped with advanced technology, including satellite tracking, GPS systems, adaptive suspensions, and traction control, making them incredibly sophisticated machines.
Connecting Trains to Daily Life
The documentary screenings coincide with Canadian Rail Safety Week, which aims to educate the public about safety around trains. The film not only showcases the operation of freight trains but also highlights the essential role that rail transport plays in the economy. Hank Neumiller, a sergeant with the CN Police Service in Melville, explained the importance of this connection: “Everything in a person’s house was on a train at some point, so making that connection between the railway and daily life is huge.”
The initiative seeks to reinforce the message that education is vital for railway safety. Constable Brad Bidulkm of Canadian Pacific Kansas Limited noted, “Enforcement is another aspect, but education is the most important aspect [for railway safety].” He emphasized the necessity of reaching various demographics, whether they are pedestrians, cyclists, or drivers, to promote awareness of railway safety.
Statistics Highlight the Need for Awareness
Statistics from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada reveal a pressing need for safety education, as there were 896 railway-related accidents in the previous year, resulting in 69 fatalities. In light of these figures, initiatives like Operation Lifesaver are crucial. This Canadian railway safety program provides essential tips, such as maintaining a safe distance from railway tracks, paying attention to signage, and ensuring trains are not approaching before crossing tracks.
For emergencies or incidents related to railways, individuals are encouraged to contact the CN emergency line at 1-800-465-9239. As the Saskatchewan Science Centre continues to educate the public through initiatives like this, it plays a pivotal role in promoting rail safety awareness and enhancing the overall understanding of rail operations.
