Science North Launches Interactive Exhibit on Illusions
Science North in Sudbury has introduced an engaging new exhibit titled PHEMOMENA, which focuses on the intriguing science of illusion. Open until April 30, 2024, this exhibit invites visitors to explore how perception can be deceived, offering a blend of visual and interactive experiences.
According to Ashley Larose, CEO of Science North, the exhibit is designed to captivate both the mind and body of its audience. “It is highly interactive, which we know our visitors love,” Larose noted. She emphasized that PHEMOMENA differs from previous exhibits, aiming to stimulate curiosity and engagement throughout the visitor’s journey.
Visitors can look forward to experiencing a variety of illusions, with a total of 20 featured throughout the exhibit. One striking demonstration showcases an optical illusion where Larose appears towering over smaller guests, illustrating how perception can be manipulated. Bruce Doran, one of Science North’s “bluecoats” or staff members, explained that the exhibit also educates attendees about the mechanics of perception. “It’s talking about how your perception may be fooled by these different exhibits and explains how that works,” he stated.
The exhibit serves as an excellent opportunity for families, coinciding with Family Day on February 16 and the upcoming March Break. Science North anticipates welcoming tens of thousands of visitors during this time, eager to explore the fascinating interplay between perception and reality.
In addition to being a source of entertainment, PHEMOMENA aims to ignite curiosity and provoke thought. Larose expressed hope that the hands-on experiences will encourage visitors to explore further the scientific concepts behind the illusions presented.
For more information about the exhibit and its offerings, visitors can check the official Science North website. As the center continues to engage and educate, it stands poised to become a key destination for families and individuals eager to delve into the wonders of science.
