Strong Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan, Leaving 250 Dead
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude struck eastern Afghanistan late on March 24, 2024, resulting in the deaths of at least 250 people and injuring more than 500 others. The quake, which occurred at 11:47 p.m., was centered approximately 27 kilometers (17 miles) east-northeast of the city of Jalalabad, in the Kunar Province. The seismic event was recorded at a depth of just 8 kilometers (5 miles), making it particularly destructive.
The Kunar Disaster Management Authority reported that the hardest-hit areas include the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapadare. Rescue efforts are underway as local officials work to assess the damage and provide assistance to those affected. The earthquake has caused significant destruction to homes and infrastructure, complicating recovery efforts in the region.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, shallower earthquakes tend to result in greater damage, a fact that has been tragically demonstrated by this recent disaster. The impact on local communities is profound, as families cope with the loss of loved ones and the destruction of their homes.
In the aftermath of the quake, emergency services have been mobilized to provide medical aid and support to survivors. The government has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any aftershocks, which are common following significant seismic events.
As Afghanistan continues to face challenges from natural disasters, international aid organizations are likely to play a crucial role in the recovery process. The humanitarian response will be vital in addressing the immediate needs of those affected and rebuilding the communities devastated by this earthquake.
