Xi and Putin Discuss Biotechnology and Immortality in Candid Exchange
A private conversation between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning advances in biotechnology and life expectancy was unintentionally broadcast during a live feed at a military parade in Beijing on March 15, 2024. This rare “hot mic” incident occurred as the two leaders walked alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, heading towards a viewing platform for a significant military display marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
During their exchange, Xi initiated the discussion by referencing changing perceptions of age. Although parts of his dialogue were unclear, a translator conveyed Xi’s sentiment: “Before it was said to be very rare to live up to 70, and now it’s said that you are still a child at 70.” Both leaders, aged 72, appeared engaged in the conversation, with Putin gesticulating and Kim occasionally smiling as he listened.
Putin’s response, though not entirely audible, was later interpreted. “In a few decades, as biotechnology continues to develop, human organs will continue to be transplanted and people will become younger and perhaps even achieve immortality,” the interpreter stated. Xi seemed to take interest in this assertion, smiling briefly as the conversation progressed.
The audio continued to capture what sounded like Xi suggesting, “Some predict that within this century, it may be possible …” with a pause before a voice indicated that it “… may be able to live up to 150 years old.” Following this, a Russian interpreter responded with, “There are forecasts that in this world, a person will live up to 100.”
This conversation provided a glimpse into the leaders’ views on the future of human longevity, amid growing advancements in biotechnology. The live feed, made available by the parade media centre to international news agencies, included significant displays of military strength, including fighter jets and missiles, intended to showcase China’s progress under Communist Party rule.
Later that day, Putin confirmed during a news conference that Xi had indeed raised the topic of life expectancy. “The chairman mentioned this,” Putin stated, referencing Xi’s comments. He further elaborated, noting the contributions of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to discussions on longevity. “Modern health and medical technologies, surgical procedures connected with organ replacements and so on give humanity reason to hope that an active life can continue differently than now,” he remarked.
The increasing life expectancy mentioned by Putin reflects broader global trends, as advancements in healthcare and technology continue to evolve. Despite their discussions, both leaders have shown no intention of relinquishing power. Xi Jinping, having abolished term limits in 2018, secured a third term as Chinese president in 2023. This contrasts with his predecessors, who typically stepped down after a decade in office.
As discussions surrounding biotechnology and life expectancy grow more prevalent, the candid exchange between Xi and Putin highlights an intriguing intersection of politics and science, potentially influencing future policies and public perceptions regarding health and longevity.
