The San Francisco 49ers are facing significant injury challenges as they prepare for their wild-card playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Both Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall are listed as questionable, raising concerns about their availability for the crucial match.

Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Williams has practiced on a limited basis for two consecutive days leading up to the game. He expressed optimism about Williams’ return after the player sustained a hamstring injury on the first snap during Week 17. However, the decision will ultimately be made closer to game time. In contrast, Pearsall did not participate in any practice sessions this week, suggesting a more uncertain status for him.

Alongside Williams and Pearsall, four additional players on the 49ers’ roster are also marked as questionable. Starting cornerback Renardo Green was limited in practice on Friday due to an ankle injury sustained earlier in the week. Linebackers Dee Winters and Luke Gifford, along with defensive lineman Keion White, also face uncertainty. Winters did not practice at all this week, while Gifford missed both Thursday and Friday sessions. White returned to the field on a limited basis after sitting out the previous two days.

The situation is complicated further by the status of Jacob Cowing, who has had his practice window opened this week. He is officially listed as questionable but is unlikely to be activated from injured reserve due to a hamstring injury.

On the Eagles’ side, three players are also questionable for the upcoming game. Notably, star right tackle Lane Johnson has been sidelined for the past seven games due to a foot injury. Linebacker Azeez Ojulari, dealing with a hamstring issue, and guard Brett Toth, who is in concussion protocol, are also uncertain for the game.

The absence of Williams and Pearsall could have significant implications for the 49ers, who struggled offensively in their recent 13-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Since Williams’ injury during the opening snap against the Chicago Bears on December 28, the team has averaged only 2.8 yards per carry when running to the left side. Pearsall’s presence is equally critical; he leads the team with eight receptions on passes traveling at least 20 yards downfield. Last week, quarterback Brock Purdy did not attempt any deep passes with Pearsall sidelined due to knee and ankle injuries.

As the 49ers head into this pivotal playoff matchup, the statuses of Williams and Pearsall will be closely monitored, with their impact potentially altering the course of the game.
