Arber Xhekaj Shines Despite Canadiens’ Defeat to Lightning
The Montreal Canadiens suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat against the Tampa Bay Lightning on January 10, 2026, at the Bell Centre. This loss came during an important matchup in the Atlantic Division standings, leaving the team in a challenging position as they seek to improve their performance.
Despite the overall lackluster display from the Canadiens, one player stood out remarkably: Arber Xhekaj. The defenseman delivered an impressive performance, showcasing both physicality and skill throughout the game. Xhekaj registered eight body checks, accounting for nearly one-third of the Canadiens’ total of 27. His presence on the ice was felt, as he demonstrated intensity and engagement in his play.
Xhekaj logged 12:34 of ice time, and his contributions were significant. He created multiple scoring opportunities while also providing solid defensive coverage. This level of effort is exactly what the Canadiens need from Xhekaj to secure his place in the lineup. If he maintains this performance, there will be little reason for head coach Martin St-Louis to consider removing him from the roster.
His versatility was also evident as he played on the right side, a position that is not his natural fit. Partnered with Kaiden Guhle on the third defensive pair, Xhekaj’s ability to adapt paid off, indicating potential for future lineup strategies. The Canadiens require a strong, physical presence on the ice, and Xhekaj’s performance exemplified this need, even though the team could not secure a victory.
Looking ahead, the Canadiens will closely monitor Xhekaj’s development in the upcoming games. His ability to deliver such impactful performances consistently could solidify his role within the team. For now, Xhekaj appears safe in the lineup, having proven his worth despite the team’s overall struggles.
As the Canadiens regroup following this defeat, they must address their performance issues to climb the standings. The spotlight remains on Xhekaj, whose evolution as a player may significantly influence the team’s trajectory in the season ahead.
