Barcelona Aims to Recover Against Alaves After Chelsea Defeat
BARCELONA, Spain — Following a crushing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea in the Champions League, Barcelona is keen to return to winning form as they host Alaves in La Liga on Saturday. The match at Camp Nou offers Barcelona an opportunity to leapfrog leaders Real Madrid in the Spanish standings, pending Madrid’s match against Girona the following day.
Barcelona has narrowed the gap in La Liga to just one point after capitalizing on recent slip-ups by Madrid. Coach Hansi Flick emphasized the need for resilience, stating, “We have to accept the defeat and stay positive about what comes next.”
Flick’s primary concern will be to shore up a defense that struggled against Chelsea, particularly missing the leadership of Íñigo Martínez, who departed for Saudi Arabia last summer. Right back Jules Koundé faced misfortune, scoring an own goal, while central defender Ronald Araújo received a red card before halftime, further complicating the match for Barcelona.
Looking Ahead to La Liga Clash
This weekend’s game against Alaves marks Barcelona’s second at Camp Nou, which is currently undergoing renovations. The team enjoyed a triumphant return last weekend, defeating Athletic Bilbao 4-0 in their first match at the stadium in over two years.
Alaves arrives at this fixture having lost three of their last four league matches and sitting in 14th place. The team is currently on a two-game losing streak, making them vulnerable as they face a Barcelona side eager to bounce back. After the Alaves match, Barcelona will have a quick turnaround, facing Atletico Madrid in another crucial league encounter just three days later.
Real Madrid is also experiencing defensive challenges. They narrowly secured a 4-3 victory over Olympiakos in the Champions League, thanks to a hat trick from Kylian Mbappé. Prior to this, Madrid drew against Elche and Rayo Vallecano in La Liga and suffered a 1-0 loss to Liverpool in Europe.
Barcelona supporters will be particularly focused on the performance of young talent Lamine Yamal, who is expected to shine after being effectively marked out of the Chelsea match by former youth player Marc Cucurella.
Injury Updates and Future Challenges
As the season progresses, Barcelona is also managing injuries within its squad. Pedri González, who has been sidelined for nearly a month due to a muscle tear, could potentially return against Alaves. His presence would be crucial, especially with Fermín López out for two weeks due to a minor injury in his lower right leg.
In addition to the on-field challenges, Barcelona is preparing for presidential elections next summer, with two candidates poised to challenge incumbent Joan Laporta.
As both teams take to the pitch on Saturday, the stakes are high for Barcelona to regain momentum in La Liga while Alaves will look to upset the odds and secure a vital three points.
