Canada Stuns New Zealand to Reach Women’s Rugby World Cup Final
Canada’s women’s rugby team achieved a historic feat on March 15, 2024, by defeating New Zealand 34-19 in the semifinals of the Women’s Rugby World Cup held in Bristol. This match marked a significant turning point, ending New Zealand’s eight-year reign as world champions. With this victory, Canada advanced to its second World Cup final, having previously lost to England in 2014.
The Canadian team dominated early, establishing a commanding 24-7 lead by halftime. Captain Alex Tessier added a crucial fifth try shortly after the break, which helped solidify Canada’s lead. Despite New Zealand’s efforts to mount a comeback, Canada’s defense proved too strong, allowing them to maintain their advantage and secure the win.
What made Canada’s victory particularly remarkable was the manner in which they outplayed the Black Ferns, a team that has long been synonymous with rugby excellence. In the past, Canada had struggled against New Zealand, suffering 17 consecutive defeats before finally breaking through with a win and a draw in their last two encounters. The Canadian squad’s dominance on the field, especially from their forwards, was unexpected and impressive.
Sophie de Goede, a pivotal lock for Canada, played a crucial role in thwarting New Zealand’s advances. Meanwhile, scrumhalf Justine Pelletier orchestrated plays that consistently outsmarted their opponents. This match marked Canada’s first World Cup victory over New Zealand, a team that has claimed the championship six times. For the Black Ferns, this loss was only their third in World Cup history and their first knockout match defeat in 34 years.
As Canada celebrates this landmark achievement, attention now shifts to the other semifinal, where England is set to face France. The outcome of this match will determine who will challenge Canada for the title in the final.
The significance of Canada’s victory extends beyond the scoreline; it represents a shift in the competitive landscape of women’s rugby. With a talented roster and a strategic approach, Canada is poised to make a strong statement in the upcoming final.
