Canada Takes Silver After 7-1 Defeat to U.S. in Para Ice Hockey

Canada’s national women’s para ice hockey team secured a silver medal after a decisive 7-1 loss to the United States in the gold-medal match of the inaugural Women’s Para Ice Hockey World Championships held in Dolný Kubín on August 31, 2025. The Canadian team, which had entered the final undefeated, faced a formidable opponent who showcased their dominance throughout the tournament.
The match saw Alanna Mah score the only goal for Canada, while Kelsey DiClaudio, who was awarded tournament MVP, led the scoring for the U.S. with an impressive four goals. The American team demonstrated exceptional defensive prowess, conceding only one goal during the entire six-team tournament. Alongside DiClaudio, Catherine Faherty, Jamie Benassi, and Kaden Herchenroether contributed to the U.S. tally, making it a historic victory.
The game began with the U.S. taking a narrow 1-0 lead into the second period. However, the momentum shifted dramatically as Faherty and Benassi scored two quick goals within a minute of each other early in the second period. By the end of the second period, the score had ballooned to 5-0 in favor of the United States. Mah managed to pull one back for Canada with a goal 10 minutes and 47 seconds remaining in the match, bringing the score to 5-1.
Both teams had showcased their strength leading up to the final, with Canada defeating Norway 7-0 and the U.S. overpowering Great Britain 10-0 in their semifinal matchups. The championship match highlighted the growing competitiveness and skill within women’s para ice hockey, underscoring the significance of this inaugural tournament.
Despite the loss, Canada’s performance throughout the tournament was commendable, earning them recognition on a global stage. The silver medal marks a significant achievement in the development of women’s para ice hockey, as athletes continue to break barriers and inspire future generations.
