Canadian NHL Teams Face Critical Challenges as Season Progresses
As the NHL season approaches its quarter mark, the seven Canadian teams are grappling with significant challenges that could shape their futures. With varying degrees of urgency, each club is focused on addressing critical questions that could impact their playoff aspirations.
Calgary Flames: Assessing Trade Assets
The Calgary Flames are currently at the bottom of the league standings and must confront their situation head-on. According to Eric Francis from Sportsnet, the Flames should consider trading veteran players to rebuild their roster. Notable names like Nazem Kadri and defenceman Rasmus Andersson are likely to attract interest from other teams. Andersson, who is a pending unrestricted free agent, averages over 18 minutes per game at even strength, with additional time on special teams. His aggressive style is evident as he ranks tied for third among defensemen in one-timer attempts.
Another player of interest is forward Blake Coleman, a two-time Stanley Cup champion. His ability to score from high-pressure areas, along with his strong penalty-killing skills, makes him a valuable asset. Over half of Coleman’s goals during his tenure in Calgary have come from inside the slot, showcasing his willingness to endure physical play for offensive contributions.
Edmonton Oilers: Defensive Struggles
The Edmonton Oilers are also facing their own set of hurdles, primarily concerning their defensive performance. Following a disappointing 7-4 loss to the Washington Capitals, the Oilers have allowed four or more goals in 11 games—tying them for the most in the league. The defensive unit, previously regarded as a team strength, is underperforming. Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard, who contributed significantly last season, have seen their expected goals percentage plummet from 60.7% to 52.8%. Coach Kris Knoblauch has made adjustments, including splitting up the duo against the Capitals.
Meanwhile, Darnell Nurse has recorded the highest number of turnovers leading to goals against, indicating a pressing need for the team to shore up its defensive strategies before it becomes detrimental to their season.
Montreal Canadiens: Navigating Injuries
The Montreal Canadiens find themselves battling a wave of injuries that has hindered their performance since a strong start. Key players such as Alex Newhook and Kirby Dach are sidelined, impacting the team’s scoring depth. In a recent game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, rookie Zack Bolduc was promoted to the top line alongside Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki, where they managed to generate a notable percentage of expected goals during their brief time on the ice.
Additionally, fellow rookie Oliver Kapanen received a significant increase in ice time and capitalized on the opportunity by scoring his seventh goal of the season, which ties him for the rookie lead. The Canadiens need these emerging players to step up as they navigate this challenging period.
Ottawa Senators: Goaltending Consistency
The Ottawa Senators have managed to secure points in 12 of their last 16 games despite missing captain Brady Tkachuk. Linus Ullmark, who has started 12 of those matches, faces scrutiny over his performance. His current statistics reflect a decrease in efficiency compared to last season, with a goals-against average of 2.84 and a save percentage of .882. For the Senators to maintain their competitive edge in the Atlantic Division, Ullmark must elevate his performance.
Ullmark’s previous season highlighted his potential, having saved 17.9 goals above expected. He has acknowledged his dissatisfaction with the current results, indicating a need for improvement.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Defensive Concerns
The Toronto Maple Leafs are grappling with significant defensive issues that could jeopardize their season. Coach Craig Berube confirmed that starter Anthony Stolarz is dealing with a more severe upper-body injury than initially anticipated, leaving the team in a precarious position. While Joseph Woll has performed admirably since his season debut, the team’s ongoing struggles in defending against the rush have allowed a concerning number of scoring chances.
The Maple Leafs must address these defensive flaws if they hope to position themselves as serious contenders this season.
Vancouver Canucks: The Battle for Penalty Kill Improvement
The Vancouver Canucks are facing a historic low in their penalty-kill percentage, currently sitting at 67.1%. This figure marks a drastic decline from last season’s success rate of 82.6%. The Canucks’ inability to effectively kill penalties has seen them drop from fifth to 30th in expected goals against while shorthanded.
The absence of key penalty killers, such as Pius Suter and Teddy Blueger, has exacerbated these issues. Despite the goaltenders’ efforts, the lack of a cohesive defensive structure is evident. The team will need to re-establish its defensive integrity to avoid further decline.
Winnipeg Jets: Seeking Additional Scoring Threats
The Winnipeg Jets are benefiting from strong performances by stars Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor, who have combined for 22 goals and 51 points in 19 games. However, the team has struggled to find secondary scoring, with only Nino Niederreiter reaching double-digit points alongside the top line.
Since captain Adam Lowry returned to the lineup, his line with Niederreiter and Alex Iafallo has shown promise, outscoring opponents while generating a significant percentage of expected goals. The Jets will need to develop additional offensive threats to mirror their previous success when they had multiple players contributing significantly to their scoring efforts.
As the NHL season continues, each Canadian team faces unique challenges that will require decisive action and strategic adjustments. The questions they must answer could ultimately define their paths in the pursuit of playoff contention.
