Cancer Survivor Michael Jaszczyszyn Opens BJJ Gym in Alberta
Michael Jaszczyszyn, a Brazilian jiu jitsu athlete and cancer survivor, has opened a new gym, Lakeland Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, in St. Paul, Alberta. This venture marks a significant milestone in his journey from battling a rare brain tumor to becoming an advocate for resilience and fitness in his community.
Jaszczyszyn was diagnosed with an optic nerve glioma in 2013, just shy of his 25th birthday. The diagnosis was daunting; doctors gave him a prognosis of two months to two years to live. With limited options and a sense of despair, he underwent numerous surgeries and radiation treatments, spending much of his time in hospitals. After extensive monitoring and a second operation to remove the tumor, he received the life-changing news that his condition was manageable.
More than a decade later, Jaszczyszyn has not only survived but thrived. Despite losing vision in his right eye, he returned to his role as an officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Initially removed from operational duties, he fought to regain his position by improving his fitness and demonstrating his capabilities, ultimately convincing the RCMP to adjust their vision standards for frontline officers.
His personal recovery journey led him to Brazilian jiu jitsu, which became a vital part of his rehabilitation. “Grappling helped retrain my spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination,” he explained. Jaszczyszyn competed successfully, winning gold medals in various tournaments while advocating for others with similar challenges.
In August 2024, Jaszczyszyn relocated to St. Paul, where he found a gap in the local martial arts scene. Recognizing a lack of Brazilian jiu jitsu facilities in the area, he was inspired to open his own gym. Conversations with local residents highlighted a demand for a training space, particularly after a server at a restaurant noticed his “cauliflower ears” and inquired about the sport.
With a clear vision, Jaszczyszyn registered his business and set about creating a welcoming environment for all. “I want this to be a very friendly community,” he emphasized, noting that previous athletic experience is not a requirement for potential students. His gym aims to be inclusive, offering modifications for various body types and skill levels.
As he embarks on this new chapter, Jaszczyszyn hopes to inspire others in St. Paul to embrace the benefits of martial arts. He is open to expanding the gym if there is sufficient interest, with plans to offer more classes and attract additional instructors.
“I encourage everyone to give it a try and see if it’s for you,” he stated, embodying the spirit of resilience that has defined his journey. The launch of Lakeland Brazilian Jiu Jitsu not only represents Jaszczyszyn’s personal triumph but also creates a new opportunity for community members to engage in a sport that promotes physical fitness and mental strength.
