Chelsea Signs Ajax Star Jorrel Hato for €46.5 Million

Chelsea FC has officially signed 19-year-old defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax for a fee of €46.5 million (approximately $53 million) excluding potential bonuses. The announcement was made by the Premier League club on Sunday, confirming Hato’s long-term contract, which will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032. He is expected to join his new teammates later this week.
In expressing his enthusiasm about the move, Hato stated, “I’m very excited, I’m so happy to be here. I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I’m very happy.” His arrival bolsters Chelsea’s defensive options as the club prepares for the upcoming season.
Despite his youth, Hato has already made over 100 appearances for Ajax, demonstrating his capability at the highest levels of competition. He has also represented the Netherlands six times. Notably, Hato became the youngest player to captain Ajax in 2023 at the age of 17, showcasing both his talent and leadership potential. His versatility allows him to play both as a left-back and a centre-back, providing Chelsea with tactical flexibility.
A Promising Future at Chelsea
Hato’s signing follows a period of interest from several of Europe’s prominent clubs, including Arsenal, which had pursued him earlier this year before opting for another defender. Ajax’s technical director, Alex Kroes, acknowledged the impact of Hato’s departure on the club. “With the transfer of Jorrel, we lose one of our pillars in defense,” he said. Kroes highlighted Hato’s talent and character, expressing regret over the loss but understanding Hato’s desire for a new challenge in the Premier League.
Kroes also added, “We would have preferred to keep him for at least another year, but we understand that he has now set his sights on this wonderful adventure that awaits him in the Premier League.” This sentiment reflects the high regard in which Hato is held at Ajax, a club known for developing young talent.
Hato joined Ajax’s academy from his hometown club, Sparta Rotterdam, in 2018 and signed his first professional contract at the age of 16 in 2022. His journey through the ranks at Ajax has equipped him with the experience and skills needed for the demands of English football.
As Chelsea prepares for the new season, they will kick off their campaign on August 17 against London rivals Crystal Palace at home. The club, which recently celebrated its success in the Club World Cup, aims to integrate Hato into their squad promptly to enhance their defensive strategy.
Hato’s transfer not only signifies a significant investment for Chelsea but also represents a pivotal moment in his young career, setting the stage for what could be a promising tenure in the Premier League.
