Cody Ponce Impresses in Blue Jays Spring Training Debut
Cody Ponce made a notable impression in his debut for the Toronto Blue Jays during a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers on March 6, 2024. The 31-year-old right-hander struck out two batters in a flawless first inning before handing the ball to teammate Tommy Nance for the second inning.
Ponce faced a challenging start, battling through an 11-pitch at-bat against Tigers’ leadoff hitter Parker Meadows. Ultimately, he secured the strikeout with a 92.2 m.p.h. cutter that resulted in a swing-and-miss. Following that, he showcased his skill by striking out Detroit’s top prospect, Kevin McGonigle, with a changeup that dropped into the dirt. Ponce capped off the inning by inducing a groundout from Jahmai Jones, which was fielded by third baseman Kazuma Okamoto.
In total, Ponce delivered 22 pitches, with a remarkable 16 classified as strikes. His fastball reached speeds of up to 96 m.p.h., complemented by a diverse arsenal that included five changeups, five cutters, one curveball, and one slider.
The Blue Jays signed Ponce to a lucrative three-year, $30 million contract during the offseason. His impressive performance in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) last season, where he set a league record with 252 strikeouts over 180.2 innings while maintaining a 1.89 ERA, earned him both the KBO MVP and pitcher of the year awards while playing for the Hanwha Eagles.
Prior to Ponce’s spring training debut, Toronto manager John Schneider indicated the team’s expectations for Ponce. “The expectation is pitching as a starting pitcher in the rotation,” Schneider said, as reported by Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith. “That’s why we sought him out. That’s why he sought us out.”
As the Blue Jays prepare for the upcoming season, Ponce’s performance could play a crucial role in shaping the team’s pitching strategy and overall success. Fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching how he develops throughout the spring training period.
