Colts Seize Victory from Broncos After Penalty Alters Fate
The Indianapolis Colts secured a dramatic 29-28 victory over the Denver Broncos on September 17, 2023, thanks to a last-second field goal that came after a controversial penalty. Kicker Spencer Shrader converted a 45-yard attempt with no time remaining, following a missed 60-yard kick that was negated by a personal foul against the Broncos.
The game concluded with a whirlwind of emotions, ranging from confusion and frustration to elation for the home crowd at Lucas Oil Stadium. After the Colts reached the Denver 40-yard line, they attempted a long field goal with Shrader. The initial kick sailed wide right and fell short, but a penalty on Broncos linebacker Dondrea Tillman for leveraging allowed the Colts another chance.
Referee Craig Wrolstad explained the decision post-game, stating, “As a defender, you’re not allowed to place your hand on an opponent or a teammate and push off to propel yourself into the air to block a kick.” This infraction advanced the ball 15 yards, setting the stage for Shrader’s successful second attempt.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen faced scrutiny for his conservative play-calling during the final moments. The Colts opted for three running plays by star running back Jonathan Taylor, who amassed 165 rushing yards. The decision seemed risky, especially as the team allowed the clock to wind down without attempting a pass after crossing midfield.
Despite the tension on the sidelines, Steichen expressed confidence in the decision-making process. “We were in field goal range there. Felt good about it,” he said. Steichen acknowledged some regret about the third-down play, which resulted in a loss of yards, but he remained upbeat about the outcome.
Shrader reflected on the rollercoaster of emotions during the final moments. “I felt that disappointment right after the kick,” he noted. After the penalty gave him another opportunity, he successfully converted the field goal, igniting celebration among his teammates.
The victory marked a significant moment for the Colts, improving their record to 2-0 for the first time since 2009. The home crowd cheered as the Colts emerged victorious, a stark contrast to the Broncos, who fell to 1-1.
This game not only showcased the unpredictability of football but also highlighted the importance of discipline and execution under pressure. As the Colts look to build on this momentum, they will undoubtedly reflect on the lessons learned from a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very end.
