Commanders Activate Terry McLaurin Off PUP List Ahead of Practice

The Washington Commanders have activated wide receiver Terry McLaurin from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, a significant step as the team prepares for the upcoming season. The announcement was made on Saturday and marks McLaurin’s eligibility to practice with the team, although he is expected to initially work with trainers on a separate field. This activation is not linked to ongoing contract negotiations, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
McLaurin was placed on the PUP list due to an ankle injury that hindered him late in the previous season. His activation follows a brief holdout at training camp, during which he incurred a fine of $200,000. By reporting to camp, he eliminated the possibility of further fines.
Contract Negotiations and Future Implications
The wide receiver’s situation has drawn attention due to ongoing contract discussions. McLaurin has one year remaining on a three-year extension worth $68 million, signed in 2022. Reports indicate that he is seeking a deal comparable to that of DK Metcalf, which averages $33 million annually with $60 million guaranteed. So far, the Commanders’ offer has not approached that figure, with some estimates suggesting they could reach around $28 million per year.
McLaurin has expressed frustration over the lack of progress in negotiations. Speaking to reporters last month, he said, “I want to continue my career here. I’ve created my life here. My wife and I bought our first home here. So this has been somewhere I’ve always wanted to be.” He emphasized his desire to feel valued and appreciated within the organization, expressing disappointment in how discussions have unfolded.
In the event of a trade, McLaurin has made clear he does not wish to leave the team, despite requesting a trade on July 31. Sources within the organization have stated they have no intention of trading him. If he were to miss game time, McLaurin would forfeit approximately $861,111 for each week he is absent, including the bye week.
Recent Activities and Performance Outlook
During his time at the Commanders’ facility, McLaurin has been mostly seen signing autographs for fans, while also observing practices. He attended the team’s intrasquad scrimmage on August 12, 2024, where he was spotted alongside other injured players. His presence on the sidelines has raised hopes for a quick return to full participation.
Coming off his second Pro Bowl appearance, McLaurin had a standout performance last season, finishing with a career-high 13 touchdown receptions and ranking second in the NFL. He has also surpassed 1,000 yards in receiving for five consecutive seasons, although he has yet to exceed 1,200 yards in a single season.
As the Commanders move forward, McLaurin’s situation will be pivotal for the team’s offensive strategy. With the season approaching, both McLaurin and the organization will need to reach a resolution to ensure that one of their key players takes the field ready to contribute.
