Cowboys, Commanders Conclude Season with Playoff Hopes Dashed
The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders will face off on December 28, 2023, in a matchup between two teams already eliminated from playoff contention. The Cowboys, sporting a record of 6-8-1, visit the Commanders, who have struggled at 4-11. Both teams enter the game looking to salvage their seasons, albeit with little at stake beyond pride.
Despite their disappointing records, the Cowboys have the chance to conclude the season on a positive note. A win against the Commanders and the New York Giants in the final weeks could allow Dallas to finish with a respectable 5-1 record in the NFC East. This would also mark the second time since the NFL expanded to a 17-game schedule in 2021 that a team finished 8-8-1, following the Washington team’s achievement three years ago.
The Cowboys’ recent form has been concerning, as they suffered a 34-17 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers last week. Meanwhile, the Commanders fell to the Philadelphia Eagles, losing 29-18. The last time these two teams met, the Cowboys dominated with a 44-22 victory on October 19, 2023.
Key Players to Watch
For Dallas, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb will be a focal point. Despite the team’s lack of playoff aspirations, Lamb is eager to finish strong. He needs just 168 yards over the final two games to surpass last season’s receiving total of 1,194 yards, despite playing in fewer games this year. He also aims to reach at least seven touchdowns to surpass his rookie total from 2020.
On the Commanders’ side, rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt, known as “Bill,” has been making headlines with six touchdowns this season. His performance will be closely monitored as Washington evaluates potential roster adjustments for the upcoming season.
Both teams’ defenses have struggled significantly this season. The Cowboys rank 30th in overall defense, while the Commanders are at an even lower 31st. Notably, Dallas has gone two games without a sack, which is a concerning trend, especially as they face a backup quarterback. The Commanders’ offensive line is also facing issues, with key players sidelined due to injuries.
Injury Updates and Future Outlook
Injuries have plagued both teams throughout the season. Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is recovering from a concussion, while defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is dealing with a neck issue after previously recovering from a concussion. Coach Brian Schottenheimer has not ruled out the return of tackle Tyler Guyton, who has missed the last four games due to an ankle sprain.
For Washington, quarterback Marcus Mariota is recovering from injuries sustained in Week 16, and his availability remains uncertain. If he cannot play, the team will rely on backup quarterbacks Josh Johnson, Jeff Driskel, and Sam Hartman. The Commanders’ offensive line has also been hit hard, with offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil missing last week’s game due to an oblique injury.
Despite the lack of playoff stakes, the matchup provides an opportunity for both franchises to assess their rosters and plan for the future. As the season winds down, fans will be watching closely to see how their teams respond in this final stretch.
With key players on both sides looking to make an impact, the game promises to be a showcase of talent, albeit with a bittersweet undertone as both teams contend with their disappointing seasons.
