Gophers Reflect on Minneapolis Tragedy After Season-Opening Win

In a somber atmosphere, the University of Minnesota Gophers triumphed over the Buffalo Bulls with a score of 23-10 on September 7, 2023. However, the excitement of the season opener was overshadowed by a tragic shooting that occurred just a day prior, claiming the lives of two children at a nearby school.

Community Grieves After School Shooting

The shooting at Annunciation Catholic School, located approximately eight miles from the university, left a profound mark on the local community. During a special Mass intended to welcome students back to school, Fletcher Merkel, 8, and Harper Moyski, 10, were fatally shot. Additionally, fifteen other students and three elderly parishioners suffered injuries in the attack.

Following the game, Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck took to the podium, using the first three minutes of his post-game press conference to express his sorrow and outrage. “We’re thinking about every single person involved in that tragedy — every family member, not just moms and dads,” Fleck shared, visibly emotional. “It’s unthinkable, and there’s a lot that has to be done.”

Fleck emphasized the need for accountability in addressing the violence that affects families and communities. “These are our kids,” he added, highlighting the profound impact of the incident on the team and the wider community.

Reflections from NFL Coaches

Just a few hours before Fleck’s remarks, Kevin O’Connell, head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah were grappling with the same tragedy. Addressing reporters ahead of their own season opener, O’Connell reflected on the emotional toll the event had on him personally, as a father of four, including children the same age as the victims. “It’s impossible for me to wrap my mind around what those parents are feeling,” he stated. “No child should ever be lost to violence in any way.”

Adofo-Mensah echoed O’Connell’s sentiments, expressing a desire for change. “I pray that we don’t have to start press conferences like this again,” he said. “We need to break some of the divisiveness that’s involved right now.”
