Huskies Secure Win with New Quarterback Jake Farrell in Command

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies celebrated a thrilling victory on October 7, 2023, defeating the Alberta Golden Bears 31-24. This marked a significant moment as backup quarterback Jake Farrell made his first collegiate start, stepping in for the sidelined starter Anton Amundrud. The win keeps the Huskies in a strong position, improving their record to 5-1.
Farrell, who had previously played mostly in third-and-short situations, faced the challenge with poise. After a shaky start that included a misfired first pass, he found his rhythm, completing 20 of 32 attempts for 276 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. “The guys around me prepared me for the moment,” Farrell stated after the game, reflecting on his teammates’ support.
Head coach Scott Flory described Amundrud’s absence as a “personal thing,” reassuring fans that the starting quarterback would return soon. Despite the setback, the team showed resilience and determination throughout the match.
Key Plays and Performance Highlights
The game began with the Huskies struggling early on, but a pivotal moment arrived when Daniel Wiebe, Canada West’s leading receiver, caught a 55-yard touchdown pass that shifted momentum and gave Saskatchewan a 7-3 lead. Farrell credited this moment as the catalyst that settled his nerves.
Saskatchewan faced adversity as they trailed 24-21 in the final five minutes. Lukas Scott stepped up, kicking a crucial 31-yard field goal to tie the game. With just 1:18 remaining, Farrell connected with receiver Mason Grabowski for a 28-yard touchdown pass—Farrell’s first career touchdown throw.
The Huskies’ scoring included a 14-yard touchdown catch from Dawson Lennea and a 12-yard touchdown run from Ryker Frank. Frank’s touchdown marked a milestone, making it the 31st of his career, breaking the Huskies’ all-time record previously held by Terry Eisler and Colton Klassen, both with 30 touchdowns.
On the opposing side, Alberta’s quarterback Trey Reider, a former standout with the Saskatoon Hilltops, completed 16 of 28 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns, including throws of eight and 62 yards to Carter Kettyle. Reider also contributed to the Golden Bears’ scoring with a two-yard touchdown run from Duncan Critch.
Looking Ahead to the Season
The Huskies now prepare for a break next weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday before concluding their regular season with two crucial matches: an away game against British Columbia on October 17 and a home game against the Manitoba Bisons on October 25.
As the competition heats up, both the Huskies and the Regina Rams, who also hold a 5-1 record after defeating Calgary 18-12, are poised for a strong finish to the season. The Huskies aim to build on their recent successes, showcasing the depth and talent of their roster.
Farrell, reflecting on his experience, noted the importance of being part of a supportive team. “I’ve spent a lot of time waiting. Waking up this morning, I was excited to share the field with the guys I love, and excited to play some football,” he said. As the season progresses, the Huskies will look to maintain their momentum and solidify their position in the conference standings.
