Jack Draper Withdraws from US Open Due to Injury

Jack Draper, the No. 5 seed at this year’s US Open, has withdrawn from the tournament due to an injury. The British player announced his decision on Wednesday, just days before he was set to compete in the second round against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs. This unfortunate turn of events follows Draper’s recent struggles with a painful bone bruise in his upper arm, which has hindered his performance.
Draper, who reached the semifinals of the US Open in 2024, had not played since his second-round exit at Wimbledon. During his first-round match on Monday, he managed to defeat Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez in four sets. Despite the victory, Draper noted that he was unable to serve with his usual power, indicating that the injury had taken a toll on his game.
Impact of Injury on Draper’s Career
This year marks Draper’s fourth appearance at the US Open, where he has consistently performed well in previous tournaments. In his past three participations, he advanced to at least the third round, and last year he made headlines by becoming the first man since Daniil Medvedev in 2020 to reach the semifinals without dropping a set. His remarkable run ended with a loss to the eventual champion, Jannik Sinner.
Draper’s withdrawal not only impacts his immediate prospects at the US Open but also raises concerns about his fitness as he heads into the latter part of the season. The injury has been a source of frustration for the left-hander, who has worked hard to establish himself on the ATP tour.
As Zizou Bergs advances to the third round by walkover, Draper’s fans and supporters will be hoping for a swift recovery for the young talent. The 2024 tournament was expected to be another opportunity for Draper to showcase his skills on a grand stage, and his absence is felt not only by his team but by tennis enthusiasts around the world.
In light of this latest development, Draper’s next steps will be closely monitored as he aims to return to competitive form in the upcoming tournaments.
