Jo Koy Energizes Fans at Pacquiao-Barrios Weigh-In in Las Vegas

Filipino American comedian Jo Koy electrified the atmosphere at the official weigh-in for Manny Pacquiao‘s highly anticipated return to the ring against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios. The event took place on March 4, 2022, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, where thousands of fans gathered to show their support ahead of the pay-per-view fight scheduled for March 5, 2022.
As a special guest at the weigh-in hosted by Premier Boxing Champions, Koy expressed his enthusiasm for Pacquiao’s comeback. He highlighted the legendary boxer’s significance to the Filipino community and the pride he brings to his fans. “This is gonna be the fight right here this weekend — it’s fully stacked. But the GOAT is back,” Koy declared during his speech. “This is officially Manny Pacquiao’s house. They should put a flag up there that says ‘Bahay ko ito, Pacquiao right here.’”
Pacquiao’s Return and Its Impact
At 46 years old, Pacquiao is stepping back into the ring for a full title bout rather than an exhibition match. This marks a significant moment in his career as he aims to reclaim championship glory. His last fight occurred in August 2021, and this return has generated immense excitement among fans and boxing enthusiasts alike.
The main event on Saturday will be broadcast live on Prime Video at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, featuring an action-packed lineup, including a co-main event rematch between Sebastian Fundora and Australian boxer Tim Tszyu. Other notable matches include Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz against Angel Fierro and a featherweight bout between Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa and Joet Gonzalez.
Koy emphasized how Pacquiao’s influence extends beyond boxing. “Manny Pacquiao was that man for us – he held that flag up high,” Koy noted. He reminisced about the pride shared among Filipinos during Pacquiao’s past victories against renowned boxers like Oscar De La Hoya and Marco Antonio Barrera. “We couldn’t wait to go back to work and talk about the fight you just witnessed,” he added.
The Atmosphere of Anticipation
The energy in the arena was palpable as fans showcased their support for Pacquiao, waving flags and cheering loudly. Koy, who is currently on a sold-out tour across the United States, described the unique atmosphere at Pacquiao fights. “It’s completely different. We’re going to see two warriors go at it. But the energy inside these arenas – it’s just unbelievable,” he remarked. “Manny always brings it. There’s never been a fight where you’re disappointed.”
In an interview with PBC, Pacquiao shared his motivations for returning, stating, “The reason I came back to boxing is that I realized I can still fight. I still have that passion, I still have that speed. I am blessed by God.” He also emphasized the importance of this fight as an inspiration for young people. “Even though I’m 46, if you are still dreaming in your life, you can make it,” he said.
For Koy, the fight represents more than just a sporting event. “When you’re Filipino, you’re always looking for something to proudly brag about,” he reflected. “You have to walk in with Pacquiao merch and Filipino flags – it just feels good to be represented. It’s fun to see someone bring a culture up, and a community up. That’s what this is.”
As anticipation builds for the showdown, the excitement surrounding Pacquiao’s return continues to resonate deeply within the Filipino community and beyond.
