Johnathon Stevens Returns to Hilltops After CFL Experience

EATONIA — Johnathon Stevens has returned to the Saskatoon Hilltops following a brief stint with the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders. The defensive lineman, who spent three months as a territorial junior development player on the Roughriders’ practice roster, is eager to contribute to his team as they gear up for their Prairie Football Conference home opener against the Edmonton Huskies on September 17, 2023.
Stevens, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound athlete, reflects fondly on his hometown. “I love that town,” he says of Eatonia, known for its rich football culture. “I miss it, but Saskatoon is pretty close, so I can get back whenever I can.” His journey in football began in Eatonia, where he played six-a-side football during high school, setting the stage for his current success.
Learning from the Professionals
During his time with the Roughriders, Stevens gained invaluable experience. “They taught me some amazing things,” he notes, highlighting the differences he observed while practicing with professional players. “The speed and physicality are on another level. An inch can make or break a play.” He emerged from the experience stronger and more refined in his skills, goals he had set for himself before joining the team.
Stevens was invited to the Roughriders’ training camp alongside his Hilltops teammate, Dalton Urban. Urban, a defensive back, unfortunately suffered a season-ending knee injury shortly after making a strong impression with an interception on Day 1. Despite facing competition from more experienced players, Stevens embraced the challenge. “It was quite the experience. I think I was mentally ready for it,” he says. “It was amazing.”
Roughriders’ head coach Corey Mace recognized Stevens’ commitment and attitude, stating, “He embodied everything we want to identify as a Rider.” Mace appreciated Stevens’ versatility and willingness to contribute wherever needed, whether it was on the defensive or offensive line.
A Leader on the Field
Back with the Hilltops, Stevens is seen as a quiet leader. His demeanor is pleasant and approachable, a stark contrast to his fierce playing style on the field. “Very soft-spoken, genuine; he’s been a heck of a football player,” says Hilltops head coach Tom Sargeant. Stevens’ experience with the Roughriders has only enhanced his capabilities, and Sargeant expects even more from him this season.
In the Hilltops’ recent season opener against the Winnipeg Rifles, although the team faced a disappointing 31-11 loss, Stevens was one of the standout performers. “John performed real well,” Sargeant admits, indicating that the experience he gained with the Roughriders should translate into strong performances on the field.
Stevens is aware of the need for improvement across the team and is committed to encouraging his teammates to elevate their game. “He’s a leader, and he’s got to draw and challenge his teammates to come up to his level,” Sargeant emphasizes.
Roots in Six-Man Football
Stevens’ football journey began in Eatonia, where he achieved notable success, including winning a provincial 1A six-a-side title in 2019. He recalls the joy of that victory and his pride in representing his hometown. “I always love talking with hometown guys about that,” he shares.
Throughout his high school career, Stevens played multiple positions, including defensive lineman, tight end, and even kicker. His versatility may lead to some interesting strategies for the Hilltops this season. “I will do whatever,” he states, indicating his willingness to contribute in any way necessary.
As he enters his final year of junior eligibility, Stevens remains open about his future in football. “I can’t say, 100 percent, what will happen after this season,” he explains. “I’ll always keep my doors open for whatever happens.”
As the Hilltops prepare for their pivotal matchup against the Huskies, the team hopes Stevens’ leadership and experience will guide them to success. With a strong foundation built on his recent experiences, Stevens is positioned to make a significant impact this season.
