Knights Trade Star Forward Sam O’Reilly to Rival Rangers
The London Knights have made a significant move by trading star forward Sam O’Reilly along with Jared Woolley to the Kitchener Rangers. This blockbuster trade, announced on Wednesday, involves an impressive package of 11 draft picks heading back to London. The deal marks a notable shift in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), particularly between two fierce rivals.
O’Reilly, 19, recently showcased his skills on the international stage, winning a bronze medal with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. Under the guidance of Knights head coach Dale Hunter, he earned recognition as one of Canada’s top three players in the tournament, contributing four goals and four assists. His performance solidified his reputation, leading to his selection by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round, 32nd overall, during the 2024 NHL Draft. Last summer, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for top prospect Ike Howard.
The Kitchener Rangers, currently leading the Midwest Division with 50 points, are expected to benefit significantly from O’Reilly’s addition as they aim to solidify their position ahead of the playoffs. The intense rivalry between the Knights and the Rangers adds an intriguing layer to this trade, as both teams are competing for dominance in the league.
The details of the trade are as follows:
To Kitchener:
– Sam O’Reilly
– Jared Woolley
– 15th round pick (2027)
To London:
– Jacob Xu
– Kane Barch
– Second-round pick (2026, Guelph)
– Fourth-round pick (2026, Peterborough)
– Fourth-round pick (2027, Brampton)
– 15th round pick (2027, Kitchener)
– Third-round pick (2028, Brampton)
– Third-round pick (2028, Peterborough)
– Fifth-round pick (2028, Kitchener)
– Sixth-round pick (2028, Kitchener)
– Second-round pick (2029, Kitchener)
– Fifth-round pick (2029, Kitchener)
– Sixth-round pick (2029, Kitchener)
This substantial trade reflects both teams’ strategies as they navigate the remainder of the season. The Knights will likely focus on rebuilding and developing young talent, while the Rangers aim to capitalize on their current momentum. As the OHL season progresses, the impact of this trade will undoubtedly be a focal point for fans and analysts alike.
