The Lakefield Chiefs solidified their position at the top of the Provincial Junior Hockey League with a decisive 4-1 victory over the Napanee Raiders on Sunday. This win, marked by an impressive second period where Lakefield outscored Napanee 3-1, allowed the Chiefs to extend their lead in the Tod Division to a commanding nine points, the largest margin they have achieved this season.

Lakefield’s performance was highlighted by strong contributions from key players. Ashton Kirwin opened the scoring with a goal in the first period. The second period saw Owen Thake and Charlie Blewett score within the first four minutes, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Despite Trent Williams netting a goal for the Raiders at 10:27 of the second period, Lakefield quickly responded. Alex Whitney scored just over a minute later, ensuring the Chiefs maintained their lead.

This victory marked the third win for the Chiefs in Week 18, bringing their record to 25 wins, 6 losses, 1 overtime loss, and 1 shootout loss (25-6-1-1), totaling 52 points. Their closest competitors, the Frankford Huskies and the Napanee Raiders, both sit at 43 points. The Chiefs have showcased extraordinary form, winning seven consecutive games and 12 of their last 14 since November 23.

Recent Performances Highlight Chiefs’ Dominance

Lakefield’s success this week included two additional victories prior to the match against Napanee. On Saturday, the Chiefs defeated the No. 6 Port Hope Panthers with a score of 5-2. They established a 3-0 lead by just over five minutes into the second period, and Nathan Gerelus capped off the game with his second goal at 5:37 of the third period.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Lakefield displayed offensive prowess by scoring four unanswered goals in the second period against the No. 7 Trent Hills Thunder, turning a 1-0 first-period lead into a commanding 5-0 advantage. The Chiefs successfully held onto that lead, achieving their third shutout in as many games following the holiday break.

Conversely, the Napanee Raiders faced challenges this week, suffering their second defeat in a row after the loss to Lakefield. Earlier, they were defeated 4-2 by the Frankford Huskies. In that match, Nolan Donnelly and Deke Osterhout scored two goals late in the first period, followed by additional goals from Ty McCambridge and Ryan Turner. Although Napanee managed to score twice in the third period through Andrew Carr and Trent Williams, they were unable to close the gap.

Amherstview Jets and Other League Highlights

The No. 5 Amherstview Jets also made headlines this week with two impressive victories, defeating the Frankford Huskies 5-1 and the Trent Hills Thunder 8-0. On Saturday, Brad Wilson scored three goals, while goaltender Dean Spry made 44 saves to secure the win. In Friday’s match, Carter McKee contributed significantly with a four-point performance, while Tyson Wilcox recorded a 23-save shutout.

In another thrilling matchup, the Trent Hills Thunder edged the No. 4 Picton Pirates with a 5-4 overtime victory. Brody Brooks scored the game-winning goal just over a minute into the extra period during a power play, capping off a comeback after the Thunder had led 4-2 through two periods.

As the season progresses, the Chiefs have nine games remaining on their schedule, and their recent form suggests they will be a formidable force in the race for the pennant. The ongoing competition in the Provincial Junior Hockey League continues to captivate fans and players alike, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the season.
