LIV Golf Awaits Approval for Ranking Points from OWGR
LIV Golf is concluding the year without a definitive answer regarding its application for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. The Saudi-funded league submitted its request in late June, but the OWGR board continues to evaluate the proposal. Notably, tournaments that are played over 54 or even 36 holes will face a points reduction compared to the standard 72-hole events.
Trevor Immelman, chairman of the OWGR, highlighted a significant hurdle two weeks ago: the majority of LIV players received invitations to join rather than qualifying through traditional means, as is customary for the other tours included in the OWGR system. An update released on Wednesday stated that while discussions are ongoing, no decision has been reached.
“We remain committed to the OWGR’s mission, which requires honouring the meritocracy woven into the professional game,” Immelman stated. “As such, discussions have been regular and remain ongoing. To be clear, progress has been made, but there is no decision to share at this time. We will continue to work closely with LIV Golf as it continues to evolve to ensure its application is handled with fairness, integrity and consistency.”
The OWGR also clarified its stance on tournament formats. It announced that 54-hole events will receive only 75 percent of the original field rating and points distribution, while those reduced to 36 holes will receive just 50 percent. For context, the European Tour faced similar challenges this year, with events like the South African Open and Singapore Classic being reduced to 54 holes.
As LIV Golf prepares to kick off its season on February 4, 2024, in Saudi Arabia, the league is hopeful of gaining approval from the OWGR. Inclusion in the ranking system is crucial, as the four major tournaments rely on it for their qualifying criteria. LIV Golf plans to transition to a 72-hole format starting in the 2026 season in an effort to align more closely with the traditional standards.
While the OWGR has recognized that several tours, such as the Big Easy Developmental Tour in South Africa and the MENA Tour based in Dubai, also conduct 54-hole events, the path forward for LIV Golf remains uncertain. The league’s evolution continues to garner attention, with implications that could affect the broader landscape of professional golf.
LIV Golf’s pursuit of ranking points remains a critical issue as it seeks to solidify its legitimacy within the global golfing community. The coming months are likely to be pivotal as the OWGR reviews the application and the league adapts to meet the established criteria.
