Matthews and Joshua Set to Return for Maple Leafs Against Lightning
The Toronto Maple Leafs are poised for a significant boost as captain Auston Matthews and forward Dakota Joshua are expected to return to the lineup for their game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 8, 2023. Head coach Craig Berube confirmed the news during a press conference on February 7, stating that both players are cleared to compete.
Matthews’ availability was uncertain following his participation in the Winter Olympics, where he helped lead Team USA to a gold medal. After returning to Miami, he is also set to attend the State of the Union address in Washington, D.C., later on February 7. His performance this season has been impressive, with 26 goals and 22 assists in 51 games.
Joshua’s return marks a significant moment in his season, having been sidelined since December due to a lacerated kidney. He has featured in only 36 games this season, contributing six goals and four assists. His presence is expected to enhance the Maple Leafs’ offensive capabilities.
The Maple Leafs are returning to action after the Olympic break, facing a demanding schedule with back-to-back games in Florida against the Lightning and the Florida Panthers on February 8 and 9, respectively. Currently, Toronto holds a record of 27-21-9 and sits six points behind a playoff position with 25 games remaining in the regular season.
In other team news, center John Tavares missed practice on February 7 due to illness but is anticipated to be available for the match against the Lightning. Berube mentioned that there are no further updates on defenseman Chris Tanev, who has been out since December 28 with a groin injury.
As the Maple Leafs gear up for this crucial stretch, the return of Matthews and Joshua could prove pivotal in their quest to secure a playoff spot. Fans will be eager to see how these key players impact the team’s performance in the upcoming games.
