Maye’s Tough Day Overshadowed by Patriots’ Defense in Playoff Win
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye expressed dissatisfaction with his individual performance despite leading his team to a 16-3 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC wild-card round on January 14, 2024. “Wasn’t pretty, that’s for sure,” Maye remarked, attributing the success to the team’s defense. He acknowledged, “I didn’t throw very well. Need to be better.”
Maye completed 17 of 29 passes for a total of 268 yards, including one touchdown, one interception, and one lost fumble. His struggles were evident in the first half, where he logged just 6 of 15 completions, marking his lowest completion percentage of the season at 40%. Reflecting on his performance, Maye stated, “Just got to be better, whether it’s accuracy or ball placement or little things, making decisions faster.”
The Patriots, now with a 15-3 record, will host the winner of the upcoming game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans on January 21, 2024. Maye demonstrated resilience against a formidable Chargers defense, delivering a pivotal 28-yard touchdown pass to tight end Hunter Henry, which extended the Patriots’ lead in the fourth quarter.
Coach Mike Vrabel praised Maye’s clutch performance, calling the touchdown throw “elite.” The quarterback showed improved efficiency in the second half, completing 11 of 14 attempts for 173 yards. Before finding his rhythm in the air, Maye made significant contributions on the ground, leading the Patriots with 66 rushing yards on 10 carries, including a notable 37-yard run that set up a field goal just before halftime.
Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. acknowledged Maye’s efforts, stating, “Every time we got him, he got back up. Every time he needed a play, he used his legs.” Despite the Patriots’ offensive challenges, their defense proved dominant, recording six sacks and limiting the Chargers to only 207 yards of total offense.
This victory marked just the fifth occasion in Patriots history where the team won a playoff game while scoring fewer than 20 points. With this win, Maye joined Tom Brady as one of only two Patriots quarterbacks in the last 35 years to secure a victory in their first career playoff start. The emphasis on teamwork and resilience was evident, as Maye expressed gratitude for his teammates’ support throughout the game.
