Mikael Backlund Aims to Stay with Calgary Flames Long-Term

Mikael Backlund, the captain of the Calgary Flames, has expressed a strong desire to remain with the team as he approaches the final season of his current contract. The 36-year-old player is preparing for what will be his last year under the two-year agreement signed previously, but his future intentions signal a commitment to the Flames.
During a recent episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman revealed insights from a conversation he had with Backlund. The discussion centered on the captain’s aspirations for the future. Backlund indicated that he is not considering a move away from Calgary, despite the team seemingly being several years from championship contention. Friedman stated, “He’s got a year left on his contract. He says that he wants to continue to play after it’s over, and he wants to be a lifetime Calgary Flame.”
Backlund’s dedication to the Flames is evident as he aims to play in the upcoming Scotia Place, which is expected to open for the 2027-28 season. The team currently has two more seasons at the iconic Scotiabank Saddledome, highlighting Backlund’s intention to remain competitive in the league.
In a similar vein, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period also reported insights from a recent conversation with Backlund. He noted, “There’s work to be done, but an extension, at some point, seems expected.” This further reinforces the notion that both Backlund and the Flames are open to discussing a potential contract extension in the near future.
Backlund was originally selected 24th overall by the Flames in the 2007 NHL Draft. Over his career, he has amassed a significant record, playing 1,066 games and scoring 215 goals along with 563 points. As he enters his third season as team captain, Backlund’s leadership will be crucial for the Flames as they navigate their current trajectory.
As the Flames look ahead, Backlund’s commitment serves as a positive signal for fans who hope to see him continue contributing to the organization. His desire to play in a new arena while still being a vital part of the team demonstrates that he believes in the Flames’ future potential. With the prospect of an extension, the Calgary Flames may secure an essential piece of their roster for years to come.
