MLS All-Stars Triumph Over Liga MX, Messi and Alba Absent

The MLS All-Star team claimed victory over the Liga MX All-Stars with a score of 3-1 on Wednesday night at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. Goals from Sam Surridge, Brian White, and match MVP Tai Baribo marked a successful 29th edition of the league’s All-Star Game. While the match and surrounding festivities were well-received, the absence of global superstar Lionel Messi and teammate Jordi Alba raised questions about the event’s appeal.
Prior to the match, MLS confirmed that both Messi and Alba would not participate, despite being selected for the event. Javier Mascherano, head coach of Inter Miami CF, expressed concerns about overextending his players. “The players are called up, I would like them to be able to rest but that is not my decision,” he stated. He emphasized the demanding schedule faced by Miami, which included a nine-game stretch from July 5 to August 6.
This scenario is not unprecedented. In 2018, Zlatan Ibrahimovic declined to play in the All-Star Game, citing fatigue, a sentiment echoed by others in the league. Players such as James Rodríguez and Erik Lira also opted out of this year’s event. The issue of player participation is compounded by the congested schedule, as both leagues gear up for the joint Leagues Cup tournament starting next week.
Beyond schedule constraints, the All-Star Game’s significance is under scrutiny. MLS and Liga MX have established multiple competitive formats, including the Campeones Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup. Many fans, especially those who attended the All-Star Game in Messi jerseys, are reconsidering the event’s value in showcasing top talent. Herculez Gomez, a former player and current commentator, questioned whether the All-Star Game still captivates audiences. “If you wanted to highlight this product, your biggest assets have to be there,” he remarked.
While some believe the All-Star Game serves as a mental break for players, not everyone shares this perspective. Six-time MLS All-Star Brian Ching noted the opportunity for camaraderie among players. “I always enjoyed the All-Star Game because it allowed you to meet and play with some of the best players in the league,” he said. He described the low-pressure environment, where players typically participate for only a half.
The league’s commissioner, Don Garber, acknowledged the challenges posed by player workloads. “Miami had a schedule that is unlike any other team,” he said, noting that Messi had played full matches in almost all recent games. Garber indicated that the league is currently managing potential penalties for absent players, including a one-game suspension for Messi and Alba.
As the 2026 All-Star Game approaches, which will be held at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, the league faces critical decisions. Garber highlighted the need to engage players, partners, and fans alike, stating, “Ninety-plus percent of our Leagues Cup matches are going to be MLS-vs.-Liga MX games, so maybe it is time for us to evolve the format.”
The All-Star Game format has historically seen changes, ranging from matches against European clubs to intraleague rivalries. While the introduction of skills challenges during All-Star week is a positive step, MLS may need to explore alternative tournament formats to capture a younger audience.
With the soccer landscape evolving, the league must consider how to maintain the All-Star Game’s relevance in a packed calendar of events. The absence of key players like Messi and Alba has underscored the need for a more compelling approach that resonates with fans and players alike. The future of the All-Star Game may hinge on its ability to adapt and innovate, ensuring it remains a highlight in the soccer calendar.
