Ndamukong Suh Announces Retirement After 13 Seasons in NFL
Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has officially announced his retirement from the NFL, bringing an end to a remarkable 13-season career. His decision comes two and a half years after he played his final game, marking a significant moment for the player and his family. Suh shared his announcement on social media on March 3, 2023, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of his father’s death.
In his heartfelt message, Suh reflected on the influence his father had on his life and career. “It’s the day I said goodbye to my father, the man who raised me, shaped me, challenged me, and believed in me before I believed in myself,” he wrote on X. The emotional tribute highlighted the profound bond he shared with his father, who he described as his idol, coach, and anchor. Suh emphasized the lessons of discipline and focus imparted by his father, stating, “Every snap I took in football carried his fingerprint.”
Suh’s father provided him with pivotal advice before his passing, urging him to embrace a new chapter in life. “It’s time to let football go. You’ve done everything you set out to do. Now it’s time for the next chapter,” Suh recalled. This poignant reminder has shaped Suh’s decision to retire from professional football.
During his time in the NFL, Suh played in 199 games across five teams, including the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Philadelphia Eagles. His career statistics are impressive, with a total of 600 tackles, 71.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, and one interception. Suh was recognized for his talent, achieving three All-Pro selections and earning five Pro Bowl invitations.
One of the highlights of Suh’s career was winning the Super Bowl with the Buccaneers in 2021, where he contributed with two tackles and 1.5 sacks in the championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Notably, he became just the sixth player in NFL history to compete in the Super Bowl with three different franchises, showcasing his versatility and skill on the field.
The Lions selected Suh as the second overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, a choice that marked the beginning of a storied career. His impact on the field was not limited to statistics; he left a lasting legacy through his tenacity and leadership, both on and off the field.
