New SJHL Team in Warman: Cole Kachur Leads Ownership Group

A new era of junior A hockey is set to begin in Warman, Saskatchewan, as a group led by Cole Kachur, Jonathan Abrametz, and Tyler Helm officially acquires a franchise in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). This marks the first time since the mid-1990s that the greater Saskatoon area will host an SJHL team, following the departure of the Saskatoon Rage.
Kachur expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It’s a huge deal,” and highlighted the rarity of such a development, noting that no new SJHL team has emerged since the La Ronge Ice Wolves were introduced in that era. The ownership group’s successful bid for the franchise was made possible by a series of fortunate circumstances, including the transfer of the team from Notre Dame College in Wilcox to Warman.
Community Excitement and Support
Kachur outlined the factors contributing to the team’s establishment, emphasizing that the timing aligned well with Notre Dame’s shift in focus towards other sporting initiatives. “We had good conversations with Kyle McIntyre and the executive at the SJHL,” Kachur explained. He also pointed out that Warman’s newly constructed rink was crucial; without it, the community would not have had the necessary ice capacity for a junior team. “It just seems like the stars aligned,” he remarked.
As part of their launch, the team initiated a season-ticket drive over the summer. Kachur shared their ambitious goal to reach 1,000 season tickets, stating that they are currently on track to secure between 450 and 500 tickets. He noted the positive feedback from local hockey enthusiasts, who eagerly awaited their own children’s hockey schedules. “In the next couple of months, we’ll find out if that comes to fruition,” he added.
The excitement surrounding the team appears to be infectious. Kachur reported a palpable buzz in the community, not only among fans but also within the corporate sponsorship sector. “There’s no doubt people are looking forward to this,” he said, indicating a strong backing for the new franchise.
Future Prospects and Challenges
As the franchise gears up for its inaugural season, the ownership group remains focused on building a strong foundation. Kachur, Abrametz, and Helm are committed to fostering a successful hockey environment that engages the community and builds lasting relationships with fans and sponsors alike.
The return of junior A hockey to Warman is anticipated to have a significant impact on local culture and community spirit. The ownership group hopes to create a team that not only competes at a high level but also serves as a source of pride for residents.
With the first puck drop approaching, the community’s enthusiasm and support will be critical to the team’s success. As Kachur and his partners prepare for the challenges ahead, the excitement surrounding the new SJHL team in Warman continues to grow, promising an exciting future for hockey fans in the region.
