New York Giants Name Jaxson Dart Starting Quarterback vs. Chargers

The New York Giants are set to start rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart in their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers on October 1, 2023. This decision comes after a disappointing start to the season, with the Giants holding a record of 0-3 following a third consecutive loss on Sunday night. The announcement was made by sources familiar with the situation, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity as the team had not officially confirmed the change.
Fans at the Meadowlands voiced their desire for Dart, chanting “We want Dart!” during the game where veteran quarterback Russell Wilson struggled, throwing an interception that contributed to the defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Brian Daboll had been noncommittal about his quarterback choice following the game, stating that he and his staff were “evaluating everything” in light of Wilson’s performance. Dart will take over as the team’s sixth different starting quarterback since 2022, following Wilson, Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock, Tyrod Taylor, and Davis Webb.
In his brief appearances over the past two weeks, Dart has yet to attempt a pass, while Wilson has completed 65 of 110 passes for 778 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. The Giants traded back into the first round to select Dart as the 25th pick in the draft, signaling their long-term commitment to the former Mississippi standout. “We wouldn’t put anybody in a game we don’t feel confident with,” Daboll emphasized when discussing Dart’s readiness.
Giants Bolster Kicking Game with Younghoe Koo
In a further development, the Giants are adding kicker Younghoe Koo to their practice squad, providing additional depth after starter Graham Gano sustained a groin injury during pregame warmups last Sunday. Gano managed to play through the discomfort, successfully converting a 25-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, but his availability for the upcoming game remains uncertain. The team has not disclosed how much practice Gano might miss this week, leaving fans and analysts alike speculating about his status.
With Dart leading the charge against an unbeaten Chargers team, the Giants hope to turn their season around and provide a much-needed boost to their struggling offense. The matchup on Sunday will be crucial for both teams, with the Giants seeking their first win of the season while the Chargers aim to maintain their undefeated streak.
