Nika Egadze Dominates European Championships, Secures Olympic Spot
Nika Egadze of Georgia captured the European figure skating title in Sheffield, England, achieving a remarkable victory by nearly 17 points on Saturday. This triumph positions her as a leading contender heading into next month’s Winter Olympics.
Egadze, skating last in the competition, delivered a personal-best performance in the free skate. She executed four quadruple jumps, scoring a total of 273.00 points—a feat that underscored her dominance throughout the event. As she concluded her routine, Egadze celebrated by diving onto the ice and sliding on her chest, eliciting cheers from the enthusiastic crowd.
Reflecting on her experience, Egadze stated, “When I came to the ice it was a little bit shaky. I just remembered the words of my coaches, I just need to enjoy the moment.” Her victory marked the second gold medal for Georgia at this year’s championships, following the success of Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava in the pairs event earlier this week.
In the men’s competition, Matteo Rizzo of Italy secured the silver medal with a score of 256.37 points, marking his fourth career medal at the European championships. Georgii Reshtenko of the Czech Republic achieved a surprising bronze, scoring 238.27 points—a personal best that exceeded his previous highest placement in major championships.
The competition saw several unexpected twists, particularly for the Estonian brothers Aleksandr and Mihhail Selevko, who initially placed second and third after the short program. Both skaters faltered in the free skate, ultimately finishing in fifth and sixth. This outcome highlighted the unpredictable nature of figure skating, as it allowed Niina Petrokina to shine in the women’s competition, winning her event.
As the European Championships conclude with the free dance segment in ice dance, Egadze’s performance has set a high bar for her competitors. With the Winter Olympics on the horizon, her confidence and recent success may prove critical as she seeks to secure a medal on the world stage.
