Noah Manning Scores First NLL Goal in Debut with Calgary Roughnecks

Noah Manning made an impressive debut in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) by scoring his first professional goal on December 7, 2025. The Colwood native netted a sharp finish during a close match, although the Calgary Roughnecks fell to the Saskatchewan Rush 16-13. This moment marked a significant milestone for Manning, who had long envisioned playing at this level, inspired by his childhood experiences at Vancouver Warriors games with his father.

“It was a pretty cool feeling,” the 22-year-old said. “I remember going to Vancouver games with my dad when I was a kid, and now being on the floor is a full-circle moment.”

Manning’s journey to the NLL began at Royal Bay Secondary, where he thrived in the school’s expanding lacrosse program alongside his younger brother, Grayson. “That program is pretty unique, and I’m so fortunate I got to go there,” he reflected. “Not a lot of Canadian high schools can offer that. Having lacrosse as a class and getting a stick in our hands every day was huge for my development.”

Grayson has also made a name for himself in the sport, currently attending the University of Denver as a goaltender. He achieved recognition as the MVP of the 2025 Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championship, leading Canada to its first-ever world title with a 6-5 victory over the United States. As he enters his sophomore year at Denver, Grayson’s accomplishments continue to inspire Noah.

Following high school, Noah committed to the Pioneers, where he played 57 games from 2022 to 2025. He amassed an impressive record of 83 goals and 39 assists, totalling 122 points. During his time at Denver, he developed under the guidance of esteemed head coach Bill Tierney, who has been pivotal in shaping the careers of numerous lacrosse players.

“He’s basically the Bill Belichick or Coach K of lacrosse,” Manning stated. “He was instrumental in my development and helped me not just become a better player, but a better human.”

His standout performance at the University of Denver caught the attention of the Calgary Roughnecks, who selected him with the ninth overall pick in the 2025 NLL Draft. With his professional career underway, Manning is focused on establishing a significant role within the team.

“I just want to contribute in any way I can,” he said. “I want to find a role, earn my minutes and be a force for this team.”

Balancing his athletic ambitions with academic pursuits, Manning is also a student at Vancouver Island University, working towards becoming a middle school teacher. He recently completed his bachelor of arts at Denver and is currently engaged in a practicum, gaining experience in a Grade 7 classroom.

“I think teaching would be such a rewarding career,” he explained. “To play even a small part in shaping a kid’s life would be so impactful.”

His rigorous schedule means that after classes, he often boards a plane to the next NLL city, fitting in a quick practice before game day. “It’s a grind, but I wouldn’t want it any other way,” he acknowledged.

Manning’s desire to teach is deeply rooted in his family background. His father, Scott, served as a principal at various schools in Greater Victoria, including Colwood Elementary and Spencer Middle School, before his passing in 2020. Noah carries his father’s influence with him, viewing him as a source of inspiration.

“My dad is my biggest inspiration for a lot of things. Teaching is just one of them,” he said. “He taught me and my brother so much. He was inspirational for my whole life.”

Looking ahead, the Calgary Roughnecks will face the Toronto Rock on December 13, providing Manning with another opportunity to showcase his talent on the professional stage. As he navigates the dual paths of sports and education, Noah Manning embodies the determination and passion that drives many aspiring athletes.
