Oregon State Ends Losing Streak with 45-13 Victory Over Lafayette
Oregon State University secured its first victory of the season on October 28, 2023, defeating Lafayette 45-13 in Corvallis, Oregon. The Beavers’ win snapped an eight-game losing streak that dated back to the previous season, providing a much-needed boost for the team and its supporters.
The standout performer of the night was junior running back Anthony Hankerson, who rushed for an impressive 204 yards and scored four touchdowns. His remarkable performance included touchdown runs of 1, 15, 9, and 65 yards, with the final score capping off a dominant offensive display by the Beavers.
Oregon State’s ground game was particularly effective, amassing a total of 365 rushing yards and five touchdowns, marking their highest rushing output since 2016. This improvement reflects a significant turnaround in the team’s offensive strategy, especially after struggling in past games.
Quarterback Gabarri Johnson, who stepped in for starting quarterback Maalik Murphy during the third quarter, contributed to the victory by completing 7 of 9 passes for 79 yards, including a touchdown. Johnson also showcased his mobility, adding 82 yards rushing on just six carries. His touchdown pass to tight end Gabe Milbourn came on a crucial fourth-and-goal situation, helping to extend Oregon State’s lead.
Despite leading 13-10 at halftime, the Lafayette Leopards could not maintain their advantage. Quarterback Dean DeNobile finished the game completing 18 of 40 passes for 176 yards, alongside a touchdown and an interception. The Leopards, who entered the game ranked with 28 points in the latest FCS coaches poll, struggled to find their rhythm in the second half, ultimately succumbing to the Beavers’ offense.
Oregon State’s defense also played a pivotal role in the win, limiting Lafayette’s scoring opportunities and forcing key turnovers. The Beavers’ resurgence in this game could signal a turning point for the team as they look to build momentum for the remainder of the season.
With this victory, Oregon State improves to 1-7, while Lafayette falls to 5-3. The Beavers will look to carry this newfound energy into their next matchup, while Lafayette will need to regroup after their disappointing performance.
As the college football season progresses, both teams will aim to solidify their positions and make a push for greater success. For Oregon State, this win could mark the beginning of a turnaround, while Lafayette will seek to return to form in their upcoming games.
