Panthers Re-sign Hunter Renfrow After Coker’s Injury

The Carolina Panthers announced on Saturday that they have re-signed Hunter Renfrow, just days after releasing the former Pro Bowl wide receiver. The one-year contract comes in the wake of a roster shake-up following an injury to Jalen Coker, who was placed on injured reserve due to a quadriceps injury sustained in practice on Thursday.
Coker is expected to be sidelined for four to six games, creating an immediate need for the Panthers to bolster their receiving corps. Coker had been slated to step into a more significant role after veteran Adam Thielen was traded to the Minnesota Vikings earlier in the week.
Renfrow’s Journey Back to the Field
Renfrow, who missed the entire 2024 season after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders, had faced significant challenges in recent years. His production dipped notably during the 2023 season while he battled ulcerative colitis. The illness left him with severe symptoms, including recurring fevers that reached 103 degrees for seven consecutive days.
Reflecting on his struggles, Renfrow expressed doubts about his future in football. “I felt so bad those two years, and I felt like I let my teammates down so much,” he said. “I had expectations… I just signed a new contract [in 2022]. I had a new coaching staff that I was going to be perfect for. And I was just a dud.” His determination to return to the field led him to join the Panthers in the spring.
Panthers’ Commitment to Renfrow
Despite initially releasing Renfrow, the Panthers maintained communication with him, hoping to eventually re-sign him as he recovered from a hamstring injury that had affected his training camp performance. Coach Dave Canales acknowledged that Renfrow was not at his best when he was cut but emphasized that both he and general manager Dan Morgan wanted Renfrow to remain part of the organization.
The need for a receiver became urgent following Coker’s injury, prompting the Panthers to expedite Renfrow’s return. Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik praised Coker’s athleticism before his injury, noting, “He’s got some freaky lateral quickness… which simulates, ‘I’m going full-tilt vertical.'” With Coker out, Renfrow’s experience and skill set will be crucial for the Panthers as they prepare for the upcoming season.
As Renfrow embarks on this new chapter with the Panthers, his return to the NFL represents not just a personal comeback but also a critical opportunity for the team to strengthen its roster. The Panthers will look to Renfrow to leverage his past success and contribute significantly as they navigate the challenges ahead.
