“Playing at St. Andrew’s was an advantage and 100 percent helped me transition to the team here,” Lio stated after practice. His father’s extensive coaching background, which includes roles as an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at York University, has also played a crucial role in Lio’s development. Marcello emphasized the importance of understanding the game from a young age, saying, “He was always safe and comfortable around the teams I coached.”

Preparing for the Season Ahead

As the Gaels finalize their roster ahead of the season opener, the coaching staff’s strategy regarding Lio and Vreeken remains unclear. Head coach Steven Snyder has not revealed who will be starting against Western, but both quarterbacks are prepared for the challenge. Lio acknowledged the significance of the match, stating, “Everyone on this team has had the game circled on a calendar. We know that to have a big season, it starts there.”

Reflecting on his previous encounter with the Mustangs, where the Gaels suffered a 39-14 loss, Lio noted the lessons learned: “We had to look after our game and what we can control, rather than looking at matchups.” He believes that the experience gained from that game contributed to the team’s playoff success.
