Republicans Divided Over Trump’s Immigration Strategy After Shooting
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates a division among Republicans regarding President Donald Trump‘s aggressive immigration policies, particularly following the shooting death of community activist Renee Good during an immigration raid. Conducted on January 15, 2023, the survey reveals that while 95% of Republicans approve of Trump’s overall performance, a notable segment is concerned about the implications of his administration’s immigration enforcement tactics.
Respondents expressed mixed feelings about the role of federal immigration officers. When asked whether these officers should prioritize reducing harm to individuals during operations—even if it means fewer arrests—39% of Republicans supported this approach. In contrast, 59% favored a more aggressive stance focused on arrests, even with the risk of serious injury or death. Among Democrats, the consensus was overwhelmingly in favor of prioritizing safety, with 96% advocating for minimizing harm.
Public Sentiment and the Context of Violence
The poll results come in the wake of heightened public interest in immigration policy, particularly following the January 7 incident in Minneapolis where Good was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. The shooting has drawn significant attention, with 90% of Americans reporting they are aware of the event. The Trump administration characterized the incident as an act of self-defense, while local leaders and activists have condemned the shooting, arguing it reflects the dangers associated with aggressive immigration enforcement.
Political strategist Jason Cabel Roe, who has been critical of Trump, emphasized the human impact of the incident, stating, “Someone died in an altercation with ICE. That is not what anyone wants to see happening.” The controversy has sparked protests across the country, with demonstrators expressing their discontent over immigration policies.
On January 15, small protests erupted near a federal building in Minneapolis, where demonstrators clashed with ICE officers. Reports indicate that officers deployed tear gas and flash-bang devices in response to the protests, leading to further tensions.
Shifting Approval Ratings
Trump’s immigration policies have historically been a strong point in his administration, with approval ratings occasionally reaching as high as 50%. However, the latest poll reflects a downturn, with his approval on immigration dropping to 40%, a record low since returning to office. In comparison, Trump’s overall approval rating fell to 41%, slightly down from 42% earlier in January 2023.
Despite this decline, Trump’s immigration approval remains relatively higher than the ratings garnered by his predecessor, Joe Biden, during most of Biden’s administration. The latest poll included responses from 1,217 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of 3%.
As immigration continues to be a central issue for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, the division within his base highlights growing concerns about the implications of his administration’s tactics. The results of the Reuters/Ipsos poll suggest a need for the Republican Party to navigate this delicate balance as they approach the upcoming election season.
