Nearly five years after a harrowing crash ended his Formula 1 career, Romain Grosjean is set to return to the track. The French driver will test a 2023 F1 car on March 15, 2024, at the Mugello Circuit in Italy, reuniting with his former team, Haas.

Grosjean’s return comes after a dramatic exit from Formula 1 during the Bahrain Grand Prix in November 2020. In that race, his car was involved in a fiery collision that resulted in it breaking in two and becoming lodged in a barrier, igniting a fire. Grosjean escaped with severe burns but missed the final two races of the season and did not secure a seat for the 2021 season.

Significance of the Return

This upcoming test is particularly poignant for Grosjean, who will don a special-edition helmet adorned with drawings from his three children. He had intended to wear this helmet during what would have been his last race in the 2020 season at Abu Dhabi, a race he ultimately could not attend after the crash.

“I really can’t believe it’s been almost five years, but to come back and have this outing with my old team is truly something special,” Grosjean remarked, highlighting the emotional weight of his return.

Since departing Formula 1, Grosjean has transitioned to racing in the United States, participating in the IndyCar Series and various sportscar events. He has competed in the Indianapolis 500 three times and made an appearance at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Friday’s event will not only mark Grosjean’s return but will also feature former IndyCar driver and current F1 presenter James Hinchcliffe, who will test a 2023 Haas car alongside Grosjean.

The reunion with Haas is expected to evoke fond memories for Grosjean, who spent several seasons with the team and contributed significantly to its development. As he prepares for this significant moment in his career, fans and fellow drivers alike will undoubtedly be watching closely.

Grosjean’s return to Formula 1 serves as a reminder of the resilience of athletes and the enduring allure of motorsport, despite the risks involved. His journey continues to inspire many in the racing community and beyond.
