Russia’s FSB Claims Ukrainian Security Service Ordered Assassination Attempt
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has alleged that agents of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) orchestrated an assassination attempt on Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, a senior figure in Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU. This assertion follows an incident that occurred on February 9, 2024, which left Alexeyev injured and in need of surgery. The FSB claims that the suspects involved in the shooting have confessed to acting under orders from the SBU.
In a statement released on Monday, the FSB identified the primary suspect as Lyubomir Korba, a Ukrainian-born Russian citizen who was extradited from Dubai. Following his extradition, Korba and another suspect, Viktor Vasin, were interrogated by Russian authorities. The FSB reported that both men admitted their guilt and provided details regarding the attack, claiming it was executed on behalf of the SBU. However, the FSB did not present any evidence to support these allegations, and attempts to reach the suspects for comment were unsuccessful.
Alexeyev, who is the deputy head of the GRU, has reportedly regained consciousness following surgery. The FSB stated that Korba had been recruited by the SBU in August 2025, in Ternopil, a city located in western Ukraine. According to the FSB, Korba underwent training in Kyiv and received monthly payments in cryptocurrency. The agency claims that Korba was promised $30,000 for successfully carrying out the assassination attempt.
The involvement of Polish intelligence in Korba’s recruitment was also mentioned by the FSB. As of now, there has been no response from Polish authorities regarding these allegations. Attempts to reach the SBU for immediate comment on the FSB’s statements were not successful.
This incident underscores the heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, particularly as both nations continue to navigate a complex geopolitical landscape. The ramifications of the FSB’s claims could further complicate relations, with each side accusing the other of aggressive actions.
As investigations continue, the international community is watching closely. The implications of these allegations extend beyond the immediate situation, potentially influencing diplomatic relations and security strategies in the region.
