The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially appointed Mike McCarthy as their new head coach, following a verbal agreement reached on January 13, 2026. Team owner and president Art Rooney II highlighted McCarthy’s extensive coaching experience and his proven ability to develop quarterbacks as key factors in the decision. “He is someone who has a longer track record than many of the other candidates, a winning track record,” Rooney stated in his first public comments since the announcement.

Rooney expressed confidence in McCarthy’s ability to lead the team back to success, noting, “He’s been a winner everywhere he’s been.” McCarthy’s history includes coaching stints with the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers, where he accumulated a total of 310 games coached and a .605 regular-season winning percentage. He also led the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XLV against a team coached by Mike Tomlin, the Steelers’ previous head coach.

Despite the organization’s optimism, McCarthy’s hiring has faced criticism from some Steelers fans on social media. Rooney dismissed these concerns, saying, “We’re really not worried about winning the initial press conference. It’s about picking the coach we believe will help us win games. Social media really doesn’t enter into it.” He reassured fans, stating, “The message for our fans is we’re very excited. We think we have a coach who is well-equipped to lead us into the next winning phase of Steelers football.”

Experience and Background

The Steelers narrowed their search to three candidates after Tomlin’s resignation, interviewing a total of nine individuals. McCarthy stood out for his experience, as he was the only candidate with significant NFL head coaching experience, apart from Brian Flores, the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. Rooney mentioned the decision to hire McCarthy was based on his qualifications and not influenced by any other factors.

Notably, McCarthy breaks the trend of the Steelers’ previous head coach hires, all of whom came from defensive backgrounds and were under 38 years old at the time of their appointment. At 62, McCarthy is the oldest head coach in franchise history. Rooney emphasized the importance of McCarthy’s ability to develop quarterbacks, stating, “Since sooner or later we’re going to be working with a young quarterback here, I think Mike’s ability to develop the next quarterback is something that certainly is important to us.”

Future Quarterback Plans

The Steelers currently have two quarterbacks under contract for the 2026 season: veteran backup Mason Rudolph and sixth-round pick Will Howard. With uncertainty surrounding the future of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who initially signed with the Steelers in June 2025, Rooney clarified that McCarthy’s hiring was not a strategy to entice Rodgers back for another season. “We decided to bring Mike on because we believe that he’s the right coach for us at this point to help lead us to a championship,” he affirmed.

Rodgers has yet to disclose his future plans but has indicated he may explore options after the season. “Whenever the season ends, I’ll be a free agent, so that will give me a lot of options if I still want to play,” he commented. With McCarthy’s reputation for developing quarterbacks, Rooney believes that the new coach’s experience will be instrumental in guiding the team through this transitional phase.

As the Steelers embark on this new chapter, the organization remains focused on building a team capable of returning to championship contention under McCarthy’s leadership.
